NURS 595 SYNTHESIS
INTEGRATIVE QUESTIONS
SPRING 2002
1 How does your philosophical basis influence your choice of methods or
methodology?
2 Does all research have to have an explicit and/or implicit philosphical
basis?
3 Does philosphy influence theory development and/or testing?
4 Can a theory be tested using different methodologies?
5 How does conceptual framework influence the choice of methodologies?
6 How can human health ecology be applied as a conceptual framework to
develop the body of knowled in nursing science?
1. Whether the required courses in the first year of the doctoral program
(NURS588, NURS589, NURS590, NURS592, NMETH580) provides a coherent sequence of
core courses? If not, what is the suitable sequence? Why?
2. Since our Ph.D. in nursing program lack of practical requirement, how to
incorporating nursing knowledge from theory development, philosophy, and
methodological perspectives into the clinical setting and research?
3. Do you think the integrations of theory development, philosophy, and
methodological perspectives can generate new knowledge in nursing science?
4. How the required courses in the first year of the doctoral program can
prepares students to advance nursing practice and education through research
and scholarly activity, and teaching?
5. Is theory always necessary to guide nursing research and practice?
6. Do you think using a multimethod and/or triangulation of methods conduct
nursing research is better than using single methods?
1. Does a philosophical approach require the use of a specific methodology and/or
method?
2. Can a theory serve as tool of knowledge organization and generation under any
philosophical approach?
3. To what extent does the study of ecology of human health influence nursing as a
science?
4. Does the evaluation or development of certain theory require only empirical
examination or can we employ alternative approaches effectively?
5. How is methodology connected to certain philosophical approaches and methods?
6. Does a research question, theoretical approach or philosophical one obligate us to use
specific methods?
Are there any potential problems in utilizing a research methodology that
is vastly different from your basic philosophic scientific belief?
Does a research problem's underlying nursing theory affect the choice of
its methodological approach? How?
Does the significance of viewing a research problem within an ecological
context vary depending on the methodological approach one utilizies?
Philosophy
1. How do philosophy and methodology articulate - does a methodology
always, consistently articulate with the same philosophy?
2. Can our understanding of ecology be expressed in philosophical terms?
Theory
1. In intervention testing -how important is it that a study be
theory-guided?
2. Does theory prescribe methodology?
Methodology
1. Method-Methodology-Philosophy: to what degree is conceptual integrity
necessary?
2. How would I describe my personal methodological ecology? That is,
describe the web of context that effects my decision-making in
relation to choice of methodology. What methodology and I most
comfortable with and why.
Philosophy
According to philosophy course, how can ecology course be understood?
How can philosophical inquiry guide nursing therapeutics?
Theory
How can theory guide nursing therapeutics course research (scientific paper)?
Are most ground theories based on philosophy or not?
Methodology
1. How do philosophy relate to methodology? Can same methodology always use same
philosophy?
2. How can ecology be understood by using different methodology?
Philosophy: 1. Specifically, how does philosophy link to theory in developing a
conceptual framework for research?
2. Is it appropriate to compare philosophical inquiry and
scientific inquiry? I do not view them as dichotomies and do not feel that
scientific inquiry is synonymous with "empirical approach", as sometimes used
in class. If nursing is concerned with systematic reflection upon human
affairs, many different approaches of scientific inquiry could be utilized.
Theory: 1. I can appreciate the difference between grand theory and middle
range theory..is it important to always distinguish what you are referring to
in conversation? Should we be more specific when speaking of "theory"?
2. The blending of disciplines such as nursing and informatics, nursing
and health services, etc. almost forces us to broaden our views and incorporate
theories from other disciplines...does this blur the scope of our professional
practice and the discipline of nursing?
Methodology: 1. The class on Methodological Perspectives left us very
enthusiastic about our research but my question is this...can a doctoral
student do justice to more than one methodology during the doctoral
dissertation? I feel less than well-prepared to undertake a research project
involving more than one methodology although I recognize that some projects may
naturally encompass more than one methodology.
2. There is so much emphasis on our personal research interest and
how we will design our study that our focus is narrowed and we may not have the
opportunity to explore other methodologies incorporating ecological
perspectives, therapeutic interventions, or social/political issues (depending
on what our interest area involves). Should there be less emphasis on our
single research phenomenon and more emphasis on the varying schools of thought
and how this can influence research design and methods?
Philosophy
1. Whar’s the relationship between philosophy and theory in the nursing inquiry?
2. How the philosophical approach can contribute to scientific-based nursing interventions
(nursing therapeutics) ?
Theory
1. What’s the essential role of theory-deriven inursing interventions?
How do you decide what theory to choose for the development of body of knowledge in the
decipline of nursing in terms of diverse methodologies?
Methodology
1. How apply the ecological perspective in different schools of thoughts?
2. How to link philosophy, theory and methodology in terms of implementing appropriate nursing
therpeautics for improving the quality of care for the area you are interested?
Philosophy:
1.Is a methodology usually congruent with philosophy?
2.How closer are related between philosophy and ecology?
Methodology:
1.How ecology views (perspectives) can influence a researcher’s chosen of methodology?
2.How does theory/conceptual framework influence the choice of methodology?
Theory:
1.How does the theory/conceptual framework give direction to a methodology?
2.How a theory/conceptual framework extends the philosophy and guides nursing research?
#1. How are philosophical basis, methodology and theory, ecological perspective
connected in nursing science?
#2. What is the role of philosophy, methodologies, and theories in nursing
science to evolve the phenomena of health and to develop nursing science?
#3. What is the main focus of each philosophy, methodologies, and theories in
nursing science to evolve the phenomena of health and to develop nursing
science?
#4. How do each philosophy, methodology, and theories, and ecological
perspective explain the nursing domain?
#5. How we can integrate philosophy, theory, and research into nursing science
within ecological perspective to produce nursing knowledge?
#6. What is the difference between philosophical basis and methodological
perspective?
(philosophy)
1.
Because philosophy focuses on providing framework for asking questions
about the central values, concepts, and assumptions of some particular
phenomena, how does one utilize one s philosophy as the guideline to formulate
his or her theoretical framework and to choose certain methodology for his or
her research interest?
2.
Based on own philosophy, how does one define human, health, and
nursing? How will one integrate this definition into one s theoretical
framework for his or her research interest?
(theory)
1.
In theory class, we debated pluralism in nursing. To what extent has
nursing discipline accepted pluralism at the philosophy of science and
philosophy of nursing?
2.
Do any of the present nursing theories serve as potential predictive
principles for nursing as a science? Is there a future for developing nursing
theories as scientific theories?
(methodology)
1.
Because multiple methodologies may compete with each other, what
benefit or function is served by holding multiple methodologies in one study?
Can RCTs include multiple methodologies?
2.
In NURS 592, we debated about whether RCTs (randomized control trials)
as the gold standard of science. What are the interrelationships among
evidence-based practice, theory-based practice, and the philosophy of nursing?
And what are the methodological issues?
Philosophy
1.
We talked about "Science is the basis of knowledge" in class.
Nobody had comments on this quote. What is "science"? When we say nursing
is a science, what mode of knowledge inquiry we are based on?
Theory
1.
Can we view knowledge from other disciplines through a nursing
perspective? Or we just borrow it as what it is? Do we need to be unique
in some way to be a professional discipline, to be called "nursing
science"?
Methodology
1.
How to combine different methodologies? (triangulation)? What is
the advantage and disadvantages?
2. What factors determine your choice of methodology? Philosophical
belief, societal values? or its generalizability?
