Karnataka Health Promotion Trust

Genesis & Mission

The Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) formed in 2003, has as its vision ‘empowered communities, working collectively to improve their health and well-being and assert their rights and dignity’.

The Mission of KHPT is to:

Enhance the health and well-being of communities through the delivery of innovative, evidence based, result oriented, gender transformative, comprehensive, sustainable and scalable programs and services, in partnership with communities served.

Strengthen the capacity of organizations including community based, governmental, non-governmental organizations, to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate programs that enhance health and well-being of communities.

Develop as a learning organization continually translating knowledge and approaches through reflection, research and engagement with our peers, in India and globally.

Where do we work?

KHPT’s implements programs in five states in India; viz.,- Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan,

Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. KHPT has a national presence through its membership in technical resource groups with the National AIDS Control Organization, Indian Council of

Medical Research and World Health Organization, India offices. It is well established as a

‘knowledge platform’ for the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Global Public Health for global knowledge translation

What do we do?

In the first ten years, KHPT demonstrated success in rapidly scaling up HIV prevention, care and support programs, through direct implementation, provision of technical assistance, and knowledge management, using an evidence-based approach. Our focus is on marginalized populations, with a focus on the most-at-risk populations (MARPs) to HIV, particularly female sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender populations, people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV), especially widows, children and adolescents who are infected and affected with HIV. Later KHPT expanded its interventions to address underlying determinants of HIV including gender inequity and gender based violence from intimate partners, adolescent education and child protection, nutrition and alternative livelihoods. Our expertise and support are provided in integrating a ‘program science’ approach into program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The expected outcome of such support is to ensure that high coverage

and maximum efficiency are achieved through contextual planning and implementation, prioritizing target populations and geographies, selecting appropriate intervention mixes, adapting programs to local contexts and ultimately transferring ownership to the communities themselves.

KHPT currently implements projects on HIV prevention, care, support and treatment; TB control and care; maternal, neonatal and child health and non-communicable diseases and covers both urban and rural poor.

How we do it?

KHPT’s approach in the first decade of its existence focused on using ‘evidence based’ approaches to reach scale rapidly, strengthen community ownership, work closely with

Government, address issues comprehensively and mainstream initiatives towards long term sustainability. Today, in the context of an evolving donor environment, enhanced Government commitment to public health and increasing engagement of community based organizations,

KHPT’s focus is on innovation, knowledge translation and technical support for the scale up of programs that will improve health and well-being of marginalized communities.

KHPT has evolved from its position as a State lead partner for HIV program implementation, to a nationally recognized agency of excellence in using a ‘program science’ approach, gender focused capacity initiatives with participatory learning and research that translates into policy and practice.

As an organization, KHPT has an active ‘Gender Integration and Committee against Sexual

Harassment’ (GI-CASH) and a ‘Child Protection’ Policy. It trains and catalyses all its partner institutions and community based organizations of female sex workers and people living with

HIV to form similar committees and policies. In its programs that aim to reduce violence among female sex workers, KHPT works closely with adolescent children and their families, local communities and governments to enhance retention of girls into secondary education. KHPT also works closely with the police and judicial academies to reduce violence among female sex workers and implements an innovative program with intimate partners of female sex works to reduce violence. KHPT has extensive experience in using exposure visits, experiential learning sites, community consultants with international expertise and e-forums to translate its knowledge in other countries in Africa and Asia.
