Imagining Animals in Art: Creatures of HABIT-at…
The animal kingdom has always provided artists with wonderful imaginary scenes of animals participating in human
activities. Stories that capture the imagination such as Alice in Wonderland, Aesop’s Fables and The Tale of Peter Rabbit
have all endowed the animal kingdom with human qualities and abilities. Illustrators like Helen Beatrix Potter and Sir John
Tenniel along with artists such as Henri Rousseau’s and his smiling monkeys and Frida Kahlo’s self depiction as a deer
lent themselves to depicting creatures that were half human and half animal. Greek and Roman mythology as well as
present day science fiction fantasy portray hybrid animals and humans. This exhibition explores the context of animals
with human qualities in imaginary settings and fanciful environments.
Open to grades K-12. 2D Artwork ONLY. Artwork should be submitted electronically as a JPEG image (no larger than
3.32 MB) through the M-DCPS Authentic Assessment On-line Submission. Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24”

Imagination Creation: Dreams & Illumination
Monks created illuminated manuscripts during the gothic period, Middle Ages, and through the Renaissance, for the
purposes of maintaining a link between written text and imagery. Produced primarily in Ireland, Constantinople and Italy,
the beautiful and substantive works of these monastic scribes of Late Antiquity is credited with the survival of the entire
literature collection of Greece and Rome today. In the strictest definition of illuminated manuscripts, only those decorated
with gold or silver were considered to be illuminated. Bright colors were used in the creation of these images, as were
decorated initials, borders and miniature illustrations. Imagination Creation: Dreams & Illumination invites students to
consider story telling through illuminated imagery, using dreams and imagination as a springboard for this exhibition!
Open to grades K-12. 2D Artwork ONLY. Artwork should be submitted electronically as a JPEG image (no larger than
3.32 MB) submitted through the M-DCPS Authentic Assessment On-line Submission. Artwork should be no larger than

Figuring Aesthetic Forms: Figures In Motion
Studying and appreciating the human form in motion through visual depiction is one that all artists both historical and
modern alike have captured through their artwork since the beginning of time. Figure, gestural, and expressionistic
renderings of the human form in motion have been notably produced through the beautiful representation of dancing
ballerinas by Degas, da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man”, Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Dance at the Moulin Rouge”, Brunelleschi’s
sweeping dome and relief sculptures, Goya’s “Las Meninas”, and countless other artists through time. This exhibition
invites you to explore the human form in motion through 2-D and low relief imagery.
