“THANKS GIVING” IN POETRY AND SONG
As we all know November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving, a joyous festival of food and family.
Thanksgiving Day commemorates the harvest festival first held by the Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag
people at Plymouth in 1621. As modern descendants of the Pilgrims and their Indian friends, we use this day to
express gratitude to God for God’s blessings and give thanks to our dear ones for their love and support. I hope
that the following poems capture the spirit of Thanksgiving Day for you as they do for me.
We Gather Together is the hymn I start humming as Thanksgiving Day nears, and I hope we sing it in church!
We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing;
He chastens and hastens his will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing,
Sing praises to his name: He forgets not his own.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, wast at our side, All glory be thine!
We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant,
And pray that thou still our defender wilt be.
Let thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
Amen (pg 433, The Hymnal 1982)
A Thanksgiving Day Prayer is a poem that reflects our modern lives.
Lord, so often times, as any other day
When we sit down to our meal and pray
We hurry along and make fast the blessing
Thanks, amen. Now please pass the dressing
We're slaves to the olfactory overload
We must rush our prayer before the food gets cold
But Lord, I'd like to take a few minute more
To really give thanks to what I'm thankful for
For my family, my health, a nice soft bed
My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head
I'm thankful right now to be surrounded by those
Whose lives touch me more than they'll ever possibly know
Thankful Lord, that You've blessed me beyond measure
Thankful that in my heart lives life's greatest treasure
That You, dear Jesus, reside in that place
And I'm ever so grateful for Your unending grace
So please, heavenly Father, bless this food You've provided
And bless each and every person invited
(Scott Wesemann, poet)
And finally, a classic statement from an old master!
For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet)

SENIOR WARDEN REPORT
“For all the Saints”, a wonderful hymn (#287), that when sung robustly, reminds us of our connections to all
those in Heaven and on earth, the Communion of Saints, who serve in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Let us take time, this month of All Saints Day, to honor all those in our families, friends and church
communities who have gone before and who are now among us. Many at St. Bart’s are saints on earth and
dedicate their time, energy and resources to the glory of God. We are most grateful, and try to serve as they
have given us example.
Some highlights of the October Bishop’s Committee meeting are as follows:
o Bills approved included:
Stained glass window installation, St. Francis Day celebration, Safe Church training,
cleaning supplies, and altar supplies
o We gratefully accepted a monetary gift to apply to property improvements
o Jr. Warden’s report:
 Grubby Sun. was very successful.
 Will purchase two new dishwasher racks
 Need work on downstairs bathrooms
o Allocated funds to pay Region 1 Dues, Rob’s trip to New Orleans, $100 as our community
tithe this month to Village of Hope , Bemidji’s homeless shelter, and books for total Ministry
and Worship committee.
o Approved a new Facility Use Agreement form to use for those wishing to rent St. Bart’s
o Discussed need for various committees such as Property and Budget to have meetings and
make decisions as soon as possible
Our next meeting will be November 9, 2010, Fireside room, 6:00 PM. Please join us.

ALTAR FLOWERS
Many thanks to those who provided flowers for the altar flowers during the five Sundays of October.
The first two Sundays of flowers were given by Carol Milowski in celebration of family & friends. On
Oct. 17th, Bea Knodel provided altar flowers in honor of the people of St. Bart’s. The last two
Sundays’ flowers were given by Jo Jordan. One Sunday was dedicated in loving memory to her
mother, Mary Asmussen, who would have been 93 on Oct. 23. The other Sunday was in honor of Jo's
beginning of her seventh year as an associate of the Order of Julian of Norwich--and in Thanksgiving
for All Hollow's Day and Eve.-- pranks, sweets, and customs all!
If you would like to supply altar flowers on any Sunday, please put your name on the flower chart and
complete a dedication form (next to the office door in the narthex). Many Sundays are ‘open’ over this
fall and this is a special way for you to celebrate or remember.
NOTES FROM THE WORSHIP COMMITTEE
The liturgical year is fast coming to a close. Sunday November 28 marks the beginning of
t
Advent and the new year. This coming year we are starting the three year liturgical cycle over so
we will officially
be in Year “A”.
Much of the discussion that we have as a committee involves an effort to give our worship
consistency and at the same time to introduce new elements so that it doesn't become stale and
uninteresting. We want to find a balance between the familiar and comfortable and the
introduction of new elements that will enhance our traditions. This isn't always easy; what seems
like a small change to one person may
be viewed as an intolerable affront to someone else. Please bear with us, sometimes what seemed
like
a good idea is clearly not in retrospect. Your feedback is always needed and welcome.
For Advent we are considering the addition of a prayer that will accompany the
lighting of the Advent wreath. Also being considered is guided Scripture
meditation held before the service on each of the four Sunday's of Advent.
There will be more about each of these in the coming weeks.
Peace, Grace, and Reason,
Steve
