Student Athlete Code of Conduct Participation in intercollegiate athletics at Eastern Maine Community College is a privilege, and the EMCC student-athletes should be aware of the responsibility that comes with representing the institution. Student-athletes are expected to act with propriety, to respect the rights of others, and to abide by all rules and regulations of Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC), the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). All Eastern Maine Community College students, including student-athletes, are expected to abide by the EMCC Code of Conduct and the Drug and Alcohol Guidelines as outlined in the Student Handbook. Eastern Maine Community College is a chemical-free campus and our chemical-free policies apply to all on- and off-campus college-sponsored events. In addition, athletes and other students who travel off-campus for college-sponsored events are serving as representatives of the College and must abide by the chemical-free policies, including students under age 21 as well as students age 21 and over. The use of alcohol, tobacco, tobacco products, or any illegal drugs is not permitted by participants, coaches, game administrators, or officials in the game areas or during any travel to and from athletic events. Use of alcohol by any athlete under the age of 21 is prohibited. Athletes who are of legal drinking are expected to observe a personal no-alcohol use policy 48 hours prior to athletic competition as well as comply with the College’s chemical-free policy as it relates to all college sponsored events and activities. All athletes are expected to be in a fit condition to participate in practice at the highest level. All athletes must report to the coach any illness or injury that may impact on fitness prior to practices or games. If a student-athlete is in need of assistance with a substance abuse problem, a self-referral may be made to the Student Support Services Counselor without punitive penalty. If a coach suspects a problem with substance abuse, but no specific incident has been documented, he or she may require a referral to the counselor and follow-up contact indicating that the athlete has kept his or her appointment for substance abuse assessment and further treatment when recommended by the counselor. In such cases of voluntary referral and treatment, no punitive sanctions will be imposed. Athletes need to remember that they are students first, and are required to communicate any athletic conflicts with their instructors. The athlete needs to make the effort to make up any exams, assignments and lectures based on the institutional policies pertaining to absences and those of the instructors. Athletes also need to make themselves aware of the academic eligibility requirements in place for participation in intercollegiate athletics according to the policies of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and those in the Eastern Maine Community College Student Handbook. Student-athletes are required to travel with their respective teams to any sanctioned offcampus event unless otherwise specified by the Athletic Director or the Head Coach. Student-athletes can make other travel arrangements prior to an event with the permission of the Athletic Director or the Head Coach; however a Travel Assumption of Risk and Responsibility Form needs to be filled out and returned to the Head Coach at least 48 hours prior to the event. Coaches must inform student athletes of these policies and may add additional rules pertinent to his/her specific team. The Eastern Maine Community College Athletic Administration will fully support appropriate disciplinary action taken by a coach. SANCTIONS Sanctions for violating college alcohol and drug use policies (outlined in the EMCC Student Handbook) will depend on the type of violation and will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Coaches may also apply sanctions applicable to their particular team. Levels of sanctions may include, but are not limited to: Non-participation – player may observe practice(s) and sit on the bench at game(s)*; Suspension from the team – player excluded from practice(s) and game(s)*; Dismissal from the team. * Coaches can also require referral to counselor before player returns to practice, game or team. Eastern Maine Community College is dedicated to providing students with fair and equitable adjudication of student grievances. All students have the right to appeal. Guidelines for appealing any sanctions applied under the Student Code of Conduct can be found on the Student Handbook. Guidelines for appealing any other decisions made by college personnel for actions that do not fall under the Student Code of Conduct can also be found in the Student Handbook. All coaches at EMCC are expected to enforce and uphold the policies outlined in this contract and will be held accountable for their failure to do so as outlined in their employment contracts. _____________________________________ Student Athlete Signature ____________________________________ Date _____________________________________ Head Coach’s Signature ____________________________________ Date _____________________________________ Athletic Director Signature ____________________________________ Date
