The Cattle of the Sun god
1. Another piece of information that
Tieresias gave Odysseus was a
warning not to touch the cows of
Helios.
2. Odysseus and his men left the
Land of the Dead and made it past
Scylla and Charybdis.
3. They saw an island in the distance
and knew it was the sun god’s island.
4. Odysseus asked his men not to
stop there because there are dangers
on this island.
5. The men were so tired that they
over ruled Odysseus and they
stopped.

6. Once on shore Odysseus made the
men swear that they would not do
anything to the cows.
7. That night while the men slept a
huge storm started.
8. The storm lasted for twenty days.
Their food was gone and the men
were starving.
9. Odysseus fell asleep from
exhaustion. While he slept the men
got together to discuss what to do.
10. One of the men said, “I will not
die from hunger. I would rather have
the gods kill me, it will be a quick
death.”

11. All of the men agreed they would
rather die by the gods than to starve.
12. They killed the cow and started
roasting the meat.
13. While the meat was cooking it
started to moo! This sound woke up
Odysseus.
14. Odysseus became very angry with
the men saying, “You fools, what are
you doing?”
15. The men ignored Odysseus and
they feasted on meat even though it
was still mooing.

16. After they were done eating they
all fell asleep. Only Odysseus has not
eaten the meat.
17. The next morning when they
woke up the storm was gone. They
had perfect sailing weather.
18. Odysseus and his men get on the
ship and they leave the island.
19. Helios knew about the cows and
went to tell Poseidon about what had
happened.
20. Poseidon sent a huge wave and it
struck the ship and it broke in two.

21. All of the men drown except
Odysseus.
22. Odysseus floated in the ocean for
several days. He found a little piece
of wood and floated on it.
23. He washed ashore Calypso’s
island. Where he stays for 7 years.
