and others . At Fort McAllister Mr. Erwin was blown some
distance by an exploding torpedo but not seriously injured .
At the battle of Duck Creek on the 4th day of Feb. ,1865 his
regiment charged the rebels through a swamp of mud and

Hopkins Wm. Capt. – 3/29/1818 – 7/29/1887 – Capt. Hopkins
was a steamboat Captain on the Ohio River , and Mississippi
River during the Civil War . During that time he was captain of
"The Tigress," which General Grant pressed into service at
Cairo, Illinois, during the progress of the Civil war. All through
its meteoric career in the military service he remained its
captain under command of the gallant Grant. At Pittsburg
Landing, Grant made his headquarters upon on the boat,
and he and the elder Hopkins had many chats together.
Later they ran the blockade at Vicksburg successfully, but
when they had safely passed the last battery "The Tigress"
sank, having been shot through the hull.

On Sept. 8, 1862, the Regiment was ordered to Louisville, KY
and left by train for that destination. At about 9 p.m. that
night as the train approached Bridgeport, IL, another train
had taken the passing track to allow the Troop train to
continue. Evidently a switch had been left open & the troop
train ran in on the passing track & a terrible wreck was the
result.
Obituary: Nathaniel Rusher, age 17, son of Charles & Rhoda
Rusher, Oskaloosa Twp. Co. A 98th Illinois Infantry. Killed in
troop train accident at Bridgeport, Illinois September 7, 1862,
body returned to Oskaloosa for burial. He was in the Army 5
