National 4 – Added Value Unit National 5 – Course Assessment Specification

Added Value assesses:

Challenge and application. Learners will carry out an assignment which shows they can investigate a chosen topic in a familiar context and present their findings in the modern language.

Added Value assesses:

Challenge and application. Learners will apply language skills to understand and use written and spoken information in the modern language.

Added Value Unit Outcomes:

Choosing a topic for investigation in a familiar context

Preparing for an investigation by describing the chosen topic with some basic supporting detail and identifying the sources to be used

Investigating a chosen topic by reading at least two straightforward sources in the modern language

Selecting basic information that is relevant to the investigation from at least two sources

Presenting their findings by using straightforward spoken language in the modern language

Pronouncing language sufficiently accurately to convey meaning in the modern language

Responding, orally, with some appropriate basic detail in the modern language, to at least three questions/contributions

Maintaining interaction as appropriate to purpose.

Evidence for this Unit will be generated through an assignment.

Learners will carry out an assignment which shows they can investigate a chosen topic in a familiar context, using their reading and writing skills, and present their findings in the modern language using their listening and talking skills.

National 5 – Course Assessment Specification

Assessment Method(s):

Question paper and Performance

Component 1 - Question Paper

The Question paper allows learners to demonstrate challenge and application in the skill of listening. Learners will identify detailed spoken language from the following familiar contexts: culture, employability, learning and society and identify and explain key aspects of detail

Component 2 - Question paper

The Question paper allows learners to demonstrate challenge and application in the skills of reading and writing. Learners will read three texts in the modern language. They will respond to questions in English by using English. Learners will produce one written text in response to a stimulus supported by six bullet points which the learner must address.

Component 3 – Performance

The Performance allows learners to carry out a spoken presentation and discussion in the modern language on a chosen topic from one of the following familiar contexts: society, learning, employability and culture.

Setting:

The assignment will be set by centres within SQA guidelines

Conducting:

The assignment will be carried out under supervised conditions.

Marking:

The assignment will be internally marked and verified and externally verified by SQA.

Controlled Assessment:

Setting:

The Performance will be set by centres within SQA guidelines.

Conducting:

The Performance will be conducted under a high degree of supervision and control.

Marking:

Evidence will be internally marked by centre staff in line with SQA marking instructions.

All marking will be quality assured by SQA.
