Principal’s Update
The Christmas holidays are over, and March Break
is just around the corner…It will bring you some
time to rest and enjoy family moments. After the
usual very busy Christmas holidays, March break
often brings more relaxed times, quality moments of
play with our children.
Let’s appreciate the winter still for the few coming
weeks!!!
Brigadière corner Barré and Denault
Our brigadière will change his hours a little starting
next week. He will be at his corner from 8 to 9AM
instead of 7:50 to 9:05. If your children use this
service, please adjust the time they leave home in
the morning for greater security. Thank you!
Staff appreciation week
William Latter School’s staff are an excellent, very
dedicated and amazing staff. They are caring, but
yet, have high expectations for our students, which
is the best match to bring the students on the road to
success. This week is a special one to say thank
you…
Please join me to say:
‘Thank you to all our staff for the wonderful work
you do every day!’
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our
Home and School Association for the delicious
banquet lunch they made for our staff yesterday. All
our staff was delighted and thanks you from the
bottom of their hearts!
Reading week and Culture in Schools project
This week is also our reading week, and many
activities promoting reading are taking place. The
students will Drop Everything And Read at
different times, they will watch a play called
Whispers in the Air, they will read with buddies
around juice and cookies… Our Culture in Schools
project is also part of our reading week, and every
class will receive the visit of an author and an
illustrator between February 5 and 12. The authors
visiting are Isabelle Larouche, Priska Poirier,
Nadine Descheneaux and Emilie Lussier. The
illustrators are Josée Bisaillon, Celine Malépart and
Jocelyn Jalette.
Following the visit of these artists, the students will
become artists themselves, and will write and
illustrate around the theme of William Latter School
and its 50th anniversary.
MCGill research on reading/parent workshops
McGill University will work collaboratively with us
over 5 years to facilitate the learning of reading for
our students. Within their research this year, they
will offer to our kindergarten parents 4 workshops
on how to support their children while they learn
how to read. The first workshop will be February
25. A separate letter with a response coupon will be
sent shortly to kindergarten parents.
Winter Carnival
Our winter carnival of last January had to be
cancelled because of the cold weather. We are
giving it a second try this February. Kindergarten
and cycle 1 will be going to the park Michel
Chartrand on February 19, while cycle 2 and 3 will
be going on February 20. You can bring the crazy
carpets and skates a few days in advance if it is
better for you.
As for the Inukshuks, we are very sorry, but we had
to cancel it. Many of you have unfrozen your 2
liters, and since we do not have snow, we are not
able to build sculptures (we need snow to hold the
pieces together). We may try it again next year.
50th anniversary of William Latter School
Our school is celebrating its 50th anniversary this
year. In May, we will organize an open house so
you can visit the school and see the wonderful work
the students did this year for this occasion. On
Saturday, May 18, the school will be open to allow
for former students, parents, community members
to visit, and participate in special activities,
including a supper. You are invited to visit the web
site created for this very special occasion, and
register on-line for the supper:

Do not hesitate to share this around!
Parent teacher interviews and report cards
On Wednesday, February 20, your child will bring
home his/her report card. On the next day, February
21, we will hold our second parent-teacher
interviews in the evening. This second round of
interviews are on a selection basis, either by the
teacher who asks to see you, or you ask to see the
teacher. The letters for the interviews will go out
next Monday, February 11.
Science fair
On Friday, February 15, our cycle 3 students along
with a few other classes who accepted the challenge
of participating in the science fair will exhibit their
science projects in our gymnasium. Please come
and visit!
Glee is back!
Now a tradition at William Latter, our Glee Club is
back in action! You will be invited to our Glee night
on Friday, April 12. I have also heard through the
Grapevine that Harold Napper School will repeat its
Riverside Glee night again this year, but no date has
been set yet. Stay tuned!
Home and School
Café Ceramique is back! You will soon receive
more information on this great activity offered by
our Home and School Association. The activity will
take place at lunch time, either in March or in April
(date to be determined). Orders of materials must be
done this February.
On-line encyclopedias accessible from home and
school
William Latter and Riverside chose to subsidize all
our students and staff to get access to French and
English on-line encyclopedias. You can have access
from home as well, not only from school. Here are
the web sites to go to, as well as username and
password to use to get in:

Invitation to volunteer from Mrs. Valerie
Dear Parents,
Lunchtime clubs have been a great success so far
this year. However, in order to be able to continue
clubs with cycle 2&3, I would need some help from
volunteers. If you would be interested in cooking
(or simply cupcake decorating, rice krispie
squares etc.) with a group of 6 to 8 children once a
week, please let me know. I am also looking for
volunteers to help run Graffiti groups at lunchtime
as well. (No spray cans involved)
If you are able to come in and volunteer at
lunchtime, please send me your name, telephone #
and availabilities to school with your child and I
will contact you with full information.
Thank you so much,
