Assignment Title – 6. Flora, Fauna and diseases of the oral cavity
The purpose of this assignment is to: Give the learners the opportunity to research the
flora and fauna of the oral cavity and oral diseases.
Scenario
You have been asked to produce a reference booklet of colour photographs of the flora,
fauna and common diseases of the oral cavity to be used by a class of dental nurses.
Task 1
In the form of a booklet aimed at educating dental nurses illustrate and describe the
common oral micro organisms.
Labeled pictures may be used to illustrate, bacteria, fungi, viruses and other flora and fauna,
both beneficial and destructive
This provides evidence for P9,
Task 2
Produce a small poster that explains the causes of tooth decay and the effect that decay
can have on the oral tissue
Describe the conditions created by diet that leads to tooth decay, and the resulting damage to
tooth structure that may be caused

Task 3
Explain as an essay the common oral diseases, particularly of the soft tissue.
Discuss a range of diseases of the oral mucosa both minor and potentially fatal.
