 Successfully transformed starch-rich, industry-preferred cassava variety, T200, with an
ACMV gene construct. Over 50 transformation events have been fully characterized and are
ready for green-house trials.

 Successfully designed the first trio-hybrid vector construct using genes from the three cassava
mosaic begomoviruses reported to infect cassava in Southern Africa (ACMV, EACMV and
SACMV). Transformation with this vector is aimed at achieving multiple virus resistance in
industry preferred starch-rich cassava varieties in Southern Africa
 Completed molecular characterization of infected field samples from 2009 survey of farmer’s
fields in Southern Nigeria.

 Surveyed and collected virus infected leaves from cultivated crops and associated weeds in
Anambra, Delta, Edo, and Ondo states in Nigeria. Molecular testing of survey samples for
Badnaviruses/Geminiviruses and investigation of the role of weeds as alternate hosts for these
viruses was initiated.
Virology Unit, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria
Senior Research Supervisor, July 2002 – December 2008
 Served as the interim Head of the Virology Unit from March 2005 - July 2007, providing
active and constant technical support, and supervision to a staff of 8 -10 and 5 post graduate
students.
 Produced rabbit polyclonal antibodies for the detection of Dioscorea alata bacilliform virus
(DaBV) and a yam isolate of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). These antibodies are currently
being used for DaBV and CMV detection and monitoring across West Africa.
 Conducted surveys of major yam-producing agro-ecological zones in Ghana, Togo and Benin.
Indexed yam leaves by ELISA, IC-PCR and/or IC-RT-PCR for five yam viruses and made
first country-wide yam virus distribution maps for the three countries.
 Cloned, sequenced and analyzed the molecular diversity among yam-infecting badnavirus
isolates from Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

 Liaised with IITA scientists and ensured timely completion of all virus indexing request to the
Virology Laboratory.
 Coordinated short (one week to six months) virology training courses and made presentations
on the goals and activities of the virology laboratory to IITA guests.
 Ensured timely purchase and prudent use of reagents and consumables in the laboratory,
screen-houses, and animal house.
 Collated and prepared the Virology Laboratory contributions for the IITA annual reports.
Research Supervisor, July 1999 - June 2002
 Assisted with purification, antibody production and optimization of an ELISA diagnostic tool
for the detection of Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) in the larvae of Maruca vitrata. A
useful diagnostic tool for the assessment of the use of CPV for the biological control of
Maruca vitrata.
 Worked on molecular differentiation of isolates of Neozygites tanajoae, a fungal pathogen
evaluated for use as a biological control agent of cassava green mites Mononychellus tanajao
 Promptly completed all external requests for scanning electron microscopy studies; studied
the effect of microbial infection on the physiology of leaf samples, the effects of various
physical and chemical treatments on starch grains from cassava, maize and coco-yam and the
structural difference of different alloys of iron and clay.
 Completed ELISA virus indexing for breeders, tissue culture clean-up and certification of
IITA mandate crops for international distribution.
 Conducted theoretical discussions and practical demonstrations of plant virology principles
and techniques in various training courses for students, visiting scientists and IITA
collaborators.
 Facilitated prompt procurement and adequate management of equipment, reagents and
consumables for laboratory use.
 Assisted with travel arrangement, preparation of name tags and conference bags during the
Plant Virology in Sub- Saharan Africa Conference hosted by the Virology Laboratory of IITA
in June 2001.
National Youth Service Corp, September1998 - July 1999
 Carried out ELISA indexing of leaf samples for viruses infecting yam and cowpea.
 Assisted with purification of Dioscorea alata bacilliform virus (DaBV) and Yam mosaic virus
(YMV).
 Implemented long-term calcium chloride preservation of plant virus isolates in virus-source
plant materials. Successfully preserved the major viruses infecting IITA mandate crops
(cassava, yam, cowpea, maize and Musa). This repository still serves as a source of reference
materials till date.
 Contributed to mechanical, insect and seed transmission studies of viruses infecting cassava,
yam and cowpea.
