Lab 3 – MITOSIS & MEIOSIS
Exercise 3A.1: Observing Mitosis in Plant Cells (pages30-33)
READ lab introduction pages 29-30.
LAB:
1. Using Figure 3.1 b of the apical meristem of onion, complete drawings and descriptions of
each stage under procedure steps 1 – 5 on pages 31 -32. DO THESE IN YOUR LAB
NOTEBOOK.
2. Repeat the above using Figure 3.2 of the whitefish blastula.
ANALYSIS:
1. Write out and answer questions 1-3 on page 33.
Exercise 3A.2: Time for Cell Replication (pages 33 – 34)
PRELAB:
1. Do the online PRACTICE TUTORIAL on determining time spent in stages of cell division --http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/cell_cycle.html
LAB:
1. Obtain a set of onion root tip cards.
2. Count ALL CELLS on one card at a time UNTIL you have counted 200 TOTAL CELLS.
3. Draw table 3.1 and record your data in your notebook.
4. Be sure to calculate the percentage of cells in each stage X 1440 minutes to find the time in
each stage.
ANALYSIS:
1. Write out and answer questions 1-3 on page 34.
EXERCISE 3B.2: CROSSING OVER DURING MEIOSIS IN SORDARIA (pages 4044)
READ the introduction pages 40-42. MAKE SURE YOUR UNDERSTAND Figures 3.14 and 3.15.
LAB:
1. Obtain a set of Sordaria cards.
2. COUNT 3 cards to determine the number of 4:4 and Number of Crossovers.
3. Draw and complete table 3.3 in your notebook
ANALYSIS:
1. Answer questions 1 & 2 on page 44.
Write THREE SEPARATE LAB REPORTS for lab 3. One report will be on
mitosis, the second report will be on time spent in mitotic stages, and report
number three will be on Sordaria meiosis. Be sure to follow the instructions for
writing lab notebook reports.
