Specsavers Eye Examination Information

The eye is the window to the body

It is recognised that a thorough eye examination can act as an early detection system for a range of potential illnesses. The commonly recognised disorder of Glaucoma, which can result in premature vision loss, is perhaps the most infamous of potential illnesses. Glaucoma however is just one of many disorders that can be detected. Others range from Diabetes, Cataracts, Age

Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) to various types of tumours that with a thorough eye examination can be detected early, resulting in early treatment that can at times be life saving.

Our qualified optometrist will conduct a full eye examination that typically takes between 20-30 minutes. The Optician uses a range of equipment to support this.

The Non Contact Tonometer measures the pressure of fluid in the eye. This test is completed on most patients over the age of 40 and assists with the detection of Glaucoma. Puffs of air are blown into each of the employees eyes in turn, air bounces back at the instrument, giving a measurement of the pressure inside each eye. This is an important test, as high pressure can indicate the early stages of glaucoma, a sight-threatening condition.

Retinal Photography is standard practice for patients over the age of 40 with many practices offering this service to all over the age of 18. Digital retinal photography is a sophisticated process that uses a digital camera to take a picture of the back of the eye and help our opticians monitor the health of the eyes . This service is free of charge at Specsavers.

The Autorefractor takes an electronic measurement of how well the employees’ eyes focus and gives a read out of their approximate prescription for the optometrist to use. If there is no record of the employees’ current prescription, the

Focimeter is used.

The optometrist will ask questions about general health, work, lifestyle and the individuals’ family's ocular health. It is very important to have a clear understanding of vision needs, especially if a specific problem is the reason for the eye examination.

The Retinoscope bounces a light beam off the back of the employees’ eye and back into the instrument. Different lenses focus the reflected light beam until it is steady, giving a close guide to the prescription needed. The Retinoscope is very accurate.

The optometrist fine-tunes the findings by using a Test Chart . The results for one eye often vary from those for the other, so each eye will be tested individually before both eyes are finally tested together. The optometrist flips different lenses in front of the eyes. Dependant on the results, the optometrist will assess and change the lenses until the clearest and most comfortable vision is achieved.

A further piece of equipment used is the Ophthalmoscope . This examines the retina at the back of the eye, including the blood vessels and the front of the optic nerve. This important test can detect changes, which can indicate diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

The Oxo Box is used to check the balance and coordination of the eyes. This is an essential check to ensure clear comfortable vision is achieved.

The Slit Lamp is a powerful, illuminated microscope that is used to examine the outer surface of the eyes - the cornea, the iris and the lens to check for abnormalities or scratches.

The visual Field Screener is used to check the peripheral vision where the screener randomly flashes dots of light on a black background. If a patient fails to see any of the dots, this can be an indication of a blind spot. This is highly recommended for patients with a family history of

Diabetes. It highlights visual blind areas, the patterns of vision loss can be recognised as some conditions of glaucoma or potential tumours.

The optometrist will also check the employees’ ability to focus. This is needed to help decide if different prescriptions are required.

An explanation will be given on the results of the eye examination and answer any queries or concerns your employee may have.

Redeeming the goods and services

Corporate vouchers must be presented on the day of the appointment and prior to the eye examination .

During the appointment, the employee will receive a full eye and eyesight examination. Should the results show the employee requires spectacles, frame selection is required same day. The typical turnaround time for completed spectacles is 1-3 working days for single vision and 7-10 for bifocal or varifocal. The employee will be advised of a date for spectacle collection, and will be notified directly in the event of any change.

Employees will receive a till receipt to confirm the delivery of goods and services. It is good practice for the employee to return the receipt to the voucher issuer.

Scheduling of appointments

It is advisable that employees book an appointment in advance. There are currently 59 practices within the Scottish region.

Locating a Specsavers practice

Employees simply call ahead to book an appointment and there are three easy ways to locate a

Specsavers practice:

An appointment can be requested by using the online appointment booking facility. By simply emailing the preferred practice, we will contact the employee, direct by telephone, to confirm an appointment time that is suitable. This facility can be found at www.specsavers.co.uk/book-an-appointment

The store locator can be found at www.specsavers.co.uk/stores . This allows employees to view a list of all Specsavers practices and select the one they wish to use

The practice list can be posted onto your intranet, or a link can be established with our website

The employee will be able secure an appointment, typically within one week, but often more quickly and whenever possible. As a reminder, we make a courtesy call, and or text the employee, twenty-four hours prior to the appointment. We endeavour to attend to all allocated appointments, on time, every time.

Many practices are open seven days a week, including late nights.

Duration of an eye examination

The typical time for the completion of an eye examination is approximately 20-30 minutes. A full ocular health check is conducted which allows us to check the health of the eye and also various distances, including intermediate distance, the recognised distance for the VDU.

Cancellation of appointments policy

We do not charge for cancellations, even on the same day. We do however request employees endeavor to contact Specsavers as soon as possible regarding any cancellation.

Dispensing fees

Prices quoted are fully inclusive of all optical services. We do not charge extra for the dispensing of such appliances.

Simplicity

Using Specsavers as your preferred eyewear supplier erases the bureaucracy often associated with multiple agents and dispensers. We are literally a

one-stop-shop’

for all your optical needs offering consistency of price, product and service coupled with real value for money and are the only national provider who can directly control every step of the process on your behalf as we own and manage every stage of the supply chain from glazing through to dispense.

Digital Mirror

Employees can look at 1000s of different pairs of glasses in just a few easy steps with our digital mirror. They can now try all our glasses from the £45 range right through to our designer styles before they visit Specsavers.

They simply upload their photo, try on the glasses they like, adjust them to fit, change the colour or see their new look close up. If they haven’t got a photo of themselves, they can use the sample face instead.

When they’ve found the glasses they like, they can save them, compare them and print them off to show your family and friends to see what they think too.

This digital mirror can be found by following these links: http://www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/womens-glasses http://www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/mens-glasses
