How your local media can put the ‘Great’ in your Great Brew Break!
Your local media can make all the difference to the success of your Great Brew Break event
by encouraging people to attend, donate money or just raise the profile of what you’re
doing to support Royal Voluntary Service. If you’re holding a public event, your local paper,
TV, or radio station is a great way to invite people, and with both private and public events,
the release and a photo after your event will help spread the word about the great cause
you’ve been raising money for.
Top tips for contacting your local media





Use the press release template below to get your local media on board
It’s a good idea to contact your local paper, TV and radio station about a week
before your event
You’ll find the email and phone numbers for your local media on their websites or in
the paper itself. Local journalists are always happy to hear about events from local
residents
Take some great pictures that you can send to your local paper straight after your
event and for use on social media (make sure you have the permission of everyone
in the photograph)
If you have any questions or need any help contact the Royal Voluntary Service
media team on media@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk
Template press releases for you to use, simply populate the release with specific
information about your event, cut and paste the finished release into an email and
send it to journalists on your local newspaper, radio or TV station.

“We realised that we don’t all get together often enough to share a cup of tea and a chat.
It’s because we’re all busy and times goes by, but that made us think what it must be like to
sit in your house all day on your own, with no one coming to see if you’re ok. We thought
why not get together, hold a fun event and raise money for older people’s services in our
town”.
Royal Voluntary Service supports over 100,000 older people each month to stay
independent in their own homes for longer with tailor made solutions. Through its army of

Formerly known as WRVS, Royal Voluntary Service has been helping people in
Britain for 75 years.
Originally set up as the Women’s Voluntary Service in 1938, the charity played a
crucial role during the Second World War.
Whilst keeping the same values of community service, Royal Voluntary Service has
now focused its work on helping older people to remain independent and get more
out of life.
Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary organisations in Britain with
40,000 men and women helping people in their homes, the community, hospitals
and in emergencies.
The charity is a founding member of the Campaign to End Loneliness, a partner in
the Big Lottery funded project, Shaping our Age, a supporter of the Malnutrition
Task Force and a member of the Care and Support Alliance, the Falls and Fractures
Alliance, Age Action Alliance and the Dementia Action Alliance.
Royal Voluntary Service has Investing in Volunteers status in recognition of its good
practice and effective volunteer management.
