Word - Journal of Machine Learning Research

Nonexclusive Publication Agreement
Agreement: We look forward to publishing your article in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Machine Learning
Research (JMLR). For the protection of your work, of the online publisher Journal of Machine Learning Research, Inc.
(the “Sponsor”), and of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whose press (the MIT Press) will be responsible for print
publication and certain other copyright administration, we need from every author whose work is to appear in JMLR
certain nonexclusive licenses. These licenses are a prerequisite for publication of the article in JMLR. However, this
instrument is not a copyright assignment.
Rights Reserved by Author: You retain copyright in your article, subject only to the specific rights given to MIT Press
and the Sponsor in the following paragraphs. By retaining your copyright, you are reserving for yourself among other
things unlimited rights of electronic distribution, and the right to license the work to other publishers, once the article has
been published in JMLR by MIT Press and the Sponsor. After first publication, your only obligation is to ensure that
appropriate first publication credit is given to JMLR and MIT Press.
Licenses to MIT Press: You hereby give to MIT Press the right to be the first publisher of the article in print form.
After first publication in print, MIT Press will have an ongoing but non-exclusive license to publish and republish the
article in print form in JMLR, and to publish the article in print anthologies derived from JMLR.
MIT Press is responsible for the dissemination of JMLR and its contents in various ways. We have standing agreements
with secondary publishers such as database publishers, microfilm publishers, and abstracting/indexing services, which
reach many people and institutions that do not necessarily subscribe to JMLR. We also, as publisher of JMLR, will
receive individual requests from scholars, teachers, and librarians to reproduce the article in various media. In order that
we may include your article in these arrangements and therefore reach a larger audience, you hereby grant MIT Press a
worldwide nonexclusive license to permit others to reproduce the article as such, and to quote from the article, in any and
all media, and to create abstracts of the article.
Licenses to the Sponsor: You hereby give to the Sponsor the right to be the first publisher of the article in electronic
form, which the Sponsor will do by means of its Internet site. After first publication online, the Sponsor will have an
ongoing but non-exclusive license to publish the article online.
Scope of Licenses: All the above licenses will be worldwide in the English language only, and will endure for all terms
of copyright in the article in all media, including media discovered hereafter.
Warranties: You warrant that you are the sole author of the Article, and generally that you have a complete and
unencumbered right to make the grants you make to us (especially with regard to previously published material). You
also warrant that the Article does not libel anyone, invade anyone's copyright, patent, or trade secret rights, or otherwise
violate applicable law. You agree to indemnify MIT Press and the Sponsor against any claim or action alleging facts
which, if true, constitute a breach of any of the foregoing warranties.
Multiple Authors: If there is more than one author of the Article, the word “you” includes all authors jointly and
severally. Your names will appear in JMLR in the order listed below. If one of you is to be the corresponding author, he
or she should indicate that fact next to his/her signature. The corresponding author may sign for all authors, if he or she
has authority to act as their agent, in which case please check the “for all authors” box when signing.
In Conclusion: This is the entire agreement between us, and it may be modified only in writing. It will bind and benefit
our respective successors in interest, including your heirs. It will terminate if we do not publish your article within two
years of the date of your signature(s).
