Viewed from one perspective, it dates back to the early part of the twentieth century, when the university offered courses in “Manual Training.” Such courses became part of the “Industrial Education” program in the 1930s. During World War II the university offered a wide variety of vocational classes. These evolved into offerings in “Industrial Technology.” In the late 1980s various courses in engineering entered the curriculum, while “industrially” oriented courses waned. 1997 – Department of Engineering 1995 – School of Mathematics, Sciences, and Engineering 1993 – Department of Engineering 1987 – Department of Engineering Technology 1973 Department of Industrial Education and Technology 1963 – Department of Industrial Education 1959 – Department of Industrial Arts and Vocational Trades 1945 – Department of Industrial Arts 1939 – Department of the Arts: Fine, Household, Industrial 1937 – Department of Applied Arts 1930 – Department of Vocational Education For the period before 1930, refer to “A History of Academic Units at New Mexico Highlands University, 1898-2001,” appended to the finding aid for the College of Arts and Sciences.” This collection includes reports, studies for the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology, affiliated programs, and program flyers.
