JOB SPECIFICATION
1. Summary of the broad purpose of the position, in relation to organisation goals:
A bowel cancer screening program is being implemented in South Australia as a component of the
National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP). This population screening program provides an
organised integrated screening pathway using the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) as the initial
screening test, with assessment colonoscopy being undertaken for participants with positive results.
The Southern Adelaide Health Service (SAHS) will recruit two NBCSP Nurse Pathway Coordinators, 0.75
FTE at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and 0.75 FTE at RGH to work collaboratively to implement and
maintain the Program in southern Adelaide. These positions will also provide services for the Noarlunga
Health Service.
2. Reporting/working relationships
The Nurse Coordinator reports to the relevant Nursing Director at the Repatriation General Hospital and
for the overall coordination of the Program to the Head of Gastroenterology & Hepatology FMC/RGH.
The Nurse Coordinator will work within a bowel cancer screening multidisciplinary team at their
respective hospitals and maintain close working relationships with Southern Adelaide Health Service –
regional office, Gastroenterology Department and Endoscopy Units, other NBCSP Nurse Pathway
Coordinators across the State, program stakeholders, including primary health care providers and SA
Health as appropriate.
3. Special conditions





The position is a part-time contract - 0.75 FTE
The incumbent may be required to enter into an annual performance agreement for the
achievement of (specific or service or program) outcomes;
Interstate and intrastate travel may be required.
A current driver’s licence is required.
Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance
Development process.






May be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service.
Some out of hours work may be required.

4. Statement of key outcomes and associated activities
Ensure appropriate service coordination of the NBCSP across southern Adelaide
The NBCSP Nurse Pathway Coordinator at RGH will work collaboratively as a member of a bowel cancer
screening multi-disciplinary team to:
 Coordinate the provision of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program assessment colonoscopy
service across southern Adelaide
 Provide information on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program and assessment colonoscopy
to health care professionals and others involved in the delivery of care to participants throughout
the screening pathway
 Initiate and participate in appropriate quality improvement and risk management strategies and
ensure compliance with standards
 Coordinate the clinical triage and prioritisation of client bookings and the management of the
waiting list
 In liaison with other state NBSCP Pathway Coordinators develop, implement and maintain a
reference manual for the provision of assessment colonoscopies consistent with national standards.
 Initiate and participate in quality improvement and risk management strategies to ensure
appropriate standards are met and maintained.
 Provide leadership, education and support within a bowel cancer screening multidisciplinary team.
 Maintain close liaison with appropriate service delivery personnel to ensure appropriate input,
advice and information dissemination on issues relating to the Program
 Ensure data is collected and maintained in accordance with national, state and local policies,
protocols and procedures
 Provide regular reports to the SAHS Regional Office in relation to service delivery and benchmarking
data as outlined in the Section 3, Attachment 19, Reporting Requirements of the SAHS Performance
Agreement
 Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of National Bowel Cancer Screening
Program projects and activities.
Ensure the provision of professional high quality patient care coordination
The NBCSP Nurse Pathway Coordinator at RGH will practice in accordance with the relevant National
and South Australian Bowel Cancer Screening Program policies, protocols and procedures including:
 Coordinate the care of participants throughout the assessment colonoscopy pathway for bowel
cancer screening
 Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health care team, and with participants and their
significant others to provide appropriate and supportive care
 Provide or coordinate the provision of high level counselling, information and support to
participants and their significant others
 Taking detailed history and conducting advanced comprehensive assessments using face to face
consultation, telephone, telehealth services or other appropriate methods relevant to nursing
practice and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program
 Ensure informed consent of participants for assessment colonoscopy, prior to the procedure
 Monitor appropriate timing of assessment colonoscopy procedures and coordinating pre-procedure
requirements
 Provide a safety net function to ensure that program participants with a positive FOBT receive
appropriate follow up




Ensure appropriate referral and assessment procedures/standards are met.
Establish links with participants that respect cultural identity and cultural safety
Use research approaches and evidence based practice to address and respond to care coordination
and service issues
Deliver nursing services appropriate to the position in accordance with legislation, standards of
nursing practice, code of ethics for nurses and public or private sector codes of conduct as
applicable.
Contribute to the achievement of nursing best practice and where relevant facilitates the
development and application of relevant nursing research by:


Facilitating and supporting nursing research within the unit as appropriate.
Disseminating the results of the Program within the unit.
Contribute to the achievement of professional expertise through the maintenance of
ongoing personal professional development/continuing education by:


Maintaining current professional knowledge and skills
Identifying personal and professional development and continuing education needs and negotiating
with the Divisional Nursing Director to arrange for these needs to be met.
Ensure the promotion and implementation of General Public Sector management aims, personnel
management standards and employee conduct standards and in particular Equal Opportunity and
Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare by adhering to the provisions of relevant legislative
requirements.
Contribute to the well-being of people in South Australia through participation in Counter Disaster
activities including attendance, as required, at training programs and exercises to develop the necessary
skills required to participate in responses in the event of a disaster and/or major incident.

Educational/Vocational Qualifications
Appointment to this position requires registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nurses Board
of South Australia and possession of a current Annual Practising Certificate. Proof of
qualification and/or registration including any necessary endorsements, is to be provided to the
employing service prior to commencement of duty.
