GASTROINTESTINAL ONCOLOGY RESEARCH
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
This Fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for academic careers in gastrointestinal
oncology by providing opportunities for clinical research and/or translational research,
further experience in the clinical management of gastrointestinal malignancies as well as
career mentorship. At least 70% of time will be devoted to research endeavors and there
will be no on-call responsibilities.
The Division of Medical Oncology at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (TBCC) consists of
21 Medical Oncologists including 7 who focus on the management of Gastrointestinal
malignancies. All the members of our GI oncology group have further training in various
fields such as medical education, investigational new drug development, clinical
epidemiology and translational research. Our group actively participates in in-house
studies, cooperative group studies, industry studies as well as translational research
through the TBCC translational laboratory.
Calgary is a growing, vibrant and dynamic city with a population of over
1,000,000 with a catchment area of 1.5 million. Situated near the Rocky Mountains,
Banff National Park and Lake Louise, Calgary is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with
easy access to downhill/cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking and
rock climbing. Calgary also boasts an active arts and culture scene and has been named
the Culture Capital of Canada for 2012. The Calgary Stampede, also known as “The
Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” is annual 10 day event held every July and is one of the
world's largest rodeos, attracting over one million visitors per year.
REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. The candidate must hold an
FRCPC in Internal Medicine, be in their final year of training in a Royal College certified
training program for Medical Oncology and expected to have completed their medical
oncology training by the date of commencement of the fellowship.
VALUE OF THE FELLOWSHIP:
The value of the Fellowship is currently $70,000.00
All benefits, application fees, malpractice insurance are the responsibility of the Fellow.

NEW APPLICATIONS:
Candidates must submit an application to the Director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology
Fellowship program by February 1, 2013.
This fellowship will extend from July 1st, 2013 to June 30th, 2014.
A complete application consists of the following:
1) An up-to-date curriculum vitae;
2) Letters of reference from three referees involved in the candidate’s training, one of
whom should be their Program Director.
3) A description of the relevance of the proposed training to the candidate’s future career.
DURATION OF INITIAL SUPPORT:
The duration of support will be for a period of one year with the potential for renewal for
a second year.
