Teacher Information: Entering his 8th season as head coach, Coach Dumas has had the opportunity to coach some
truly outstanding student/athletes. During his seven seasons leading the program, Coach Dumas has been recognized
three times as Region Coach of the Year. He has also been recognized by the Arizona Republic and EV Tribune as
Coach of the Year in addition to being selected by the Arizona Basketball Coaches Association as 5A D1 Coach of the
Year. Over the past 7 seasons the Mustangs have averaged over 20 wins per season, including last year’s 24 win team
that advanced to the Division 1 Final Four. During his tenure the Mustangs have had 20 players have the
opportunity to play basketball beyond high school!
Course Description: This course is designed for the serious athlete that plans to participate in basketball at Dobson.
We plan to prepare the student/athlete physically and mentally to be prepared for the rigor of a high school basketball
season.
Course Information: The most effective method of communication is email. I will return your email or phone call within
24 hours unless there are unforeseen circumstances.
Course Materials
The following items are suggested for the course:
 Basketball shoes, outdoor shoes for running, comfortable exercise clothes that comply with DHS dress code.
 Water. The student athlete should hydrate all day. Athletes are given permission to have water and or sports
drinks in the regular classroom.
THE TEAM: Participation in this course does not guarantee a player a position on the varsity or junior varsity teams.
The course is designed to prepare students for tryouts and for those that make the team for season. If a participant in
this course does not make the team they will be moved to a different AA PE course after tryouts.
Academic Information
Grades: Student grades will reflect growth in basketball skills relative to the individual student. Students will be given a
workout to complete and skills to master that correspond to their current skill set. Improvement and growth will be
assessed by the student and the teacher. If they fail to dress out or participate in a manner that is inconsistent with the
purpose of the course an alternative placement may be required. In addition, we will measure improvement relative to
the individual in physical tasks such as weight training, speed and agility, and conditioning.
The student’s overall grade will be composed of the following:
Participation (Including fitness and strength tests)
Basketball Skills and Concepts
50%
50%
Make-up Work: Students can make up work by coming in after school for a training session with our strength and
conditioning coach or participating in a conditioning activity after school. The student can also complete their workout
outside of class time.
Attendance
Because attendance is the single most important characteristic to determine success in school, the DHS attendance
policy will be strictly enforced. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a make-up session.
Students with excessive absences will be counseled appropriate to the situation.
Discipline: Disruptive behavior in class will result in a warning. Subsequently, if the student does not choose
appropriate behavior, the student will be removed from the classroom. This will also result in parent contact. Repeated
incidents of disruptive behavior will result in a parent-teacher-student conference, behavior contract, or administrative
intervention.
