Math Department ALGEBRA 1- Course Syllabus Instructor Mr. Minott Phone (718) 860-5110 School GILP E-mail rminott3@schools.nyc.gov Class Period & Time 2 Course Description: Algebra 1 introduces students to variables, algebraic expressions, equations, functions, inequalities, and their multiple representations. The students develop the ability to explore and solve real-world application problems, demonstrate the appropriate use of graphing calculators, and communicate mathematical ideas clearly. This course lays the foundation for every subsequent course in mathematics. The topics learned in Algebra 1 comprise a large part of the PSAE objectives. Success in Algebra I must be encouraged and emphasized since it is an accurate indicator of future success. Student Expectations: As this is a high school course, students should understand the rigor and pacing will be demanding. Students are responsible for daily studying outside of class. Homework will also be assigned each class. Students are expected to be on time and prepared to work each class session. Failure to complete required assignments and/or excessive absences will result in the student being dropped from the course. In order for the student to be able to take the exit exam they must have a grade of “C” or better for each quarter. It is the responsibility of the student to write down the homework in their agenda and visit www.rincon.com daily. The grade in this course will be used in determining promotion. Student Materials (must be brought daily): CME Project Algebra I textbook CME Project Algebra practice workbook Binder (with four divided sections for homework, , notes, assessments and miscellaneous Loose leaf (3-hole punched) Graph Paper (3-hole punched) Algebra I Textbook Pencils, sharpener, and red pen Supplementary Resources: http://www.math.com http://mathforum.org/dr.math http://www.freemathhelp.com Page 1 Math Department http://studyisland.com Course Scope, Sequence and Pacing: For guidance, use Algebra 1 Course Framework, Algebra I Course Planning Map, Course Framework Major Curriculum Structure Alignment, and the Algebra 1 Course Syllabus and Pacing Guide. Chapter Major Topics-CME- Algebra I 1 Arithmetic to Algebra (tables of arithmetic, number line, and algorithms) 2 Expressions and Equations (expressions, equations, solving linear equations, word problems 3 Graphs (intro. to coordinates, statistical data, equations and graphs. Translations) 4 Lines (slope, linear equations and graphs, intersections, and applications of lines) 5 Introduction to Functions (functions, graphs, tables, and situations) 6 Exponents and Radicals (exponents, radicals, exponential expressions and functions) 7 Polynomials (equivalent expressions, arithmetic of, factoring to solve quadratics) 8 Quadratics (quadratic formula, graphs and applications, working with ) Grading Policy: Student will be graded using the following criteria: Participation/Attendance (daily attendance is mandatory) 10% Class work (Binder, activities, group work) 15% Homework (assigned daily!!) 25% Quizzes/Tests 50% Participation will be assessed based on classroom participation, positive/constructive behavior, and teacher observation. Homework will be graded each day; students must demonstrate an honest effort in attempting every problem assigned. Anything less receives a failing grade. Late work will not be accepted. In addition to quizzes and chapter/unit tests, there will be an Exit Exam in May. The student must maintain a C average in order to qualify for the Exit Exam in May.
