BOTOX
®
treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that helps smooth the deep, persistent forehead, frown and crow ’s feet lines that develop over time. Treatment of each area together or independently relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up to 4 months. BOTOX
®
has been widely tested. Now the American
FDA & Australian TGA has approved it for cosmetic use.
The results are often dramatic and are apparent within days. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of the men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their brow lines as moderate to better. For many, BOTOX
®
virtually "erases" these lines.
Unlike surgery, BOTOX
®
is fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no down-time or recovery. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Within days, they report looking more natural and relaxed. With
BOTOX
®
, they’ll know you’ve done something, they just won’t know what.
The most common side effects are headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop and nausea.
BOTOX
®
should not be used if there is an infection at injection site.
What to expect from BOTOX
®
.
Your doctor will determine exactly where to administer several (3-5) tiny injections in each area to achieve the best results. No anaesthesia is required, although he may if you wish, numb the area with a cold pack prior to injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately ten minutes per region.
Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients compare the sensation to an insect bite. It is unlikely you will develop significant side effects, although some people develop slight temporary bruising at the injection site, which can easily be covered by makeup. You may resume normal activity immediately – though you must not lie down or massage the area for 3 hours after the procedure.
Within days, you'll see a marked improvement, which may continue to improve for as long as 7 to 10 days and should last up to four months.
BOTOX
®
relaxes the overactive muscles whose repeated contractions cause the lines between your brows, about your eyes or on your forehead to form. So you can frown, smile, or look surprised - without the furrows, creases and wrinkles.

What is BOTOX
®
?
BOTOX
®
is a novel therapeutic agent derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. Also known as Botulinum
Toxin Type A, the brand BOTOX
®
is produced in controlled laboratory conditions and given in extremely small therapeutic doses.
How does BOTOX
®
work?
Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. BOTOX
®
works to block the release of acetylcholine and, as a result, the muscle doesn't receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle contractions stop or are greatly reduced after using BOTOX
®
, providing predictable and reliable relief from the wrinkles that the contraction would produce.
BOTOX
®
is not a cure. For many patients, however, its effects have been dramatic - wrinkles usually begin to dissipate within a few days and the effects can last for approximately three months.
How is BOTOX
®
administered?
BOTOX
®
is injected into the muscle. The injecting doctor needs to determine the appropriate muscle for injection and the dose required.
Does the treatment hurt?
A very fine needle is used for the one to three injections that are usually given per muscle. Some patients report minor and temporary discomfort from treatment.
When does BOTOX
®
start to work?
Usually, you will see the effects of BOTOX
® within three days. The maximum benefit is reached in one to two weeks.
How long does BOTOX
®
last?
Generally the action of BOTOX
®
will last approximately 3 months. However, this may vary from patient to patient and in different areas. Usually BOTOX
®
injections are required 3 to 4 times per year
How long can patients be treated with BOTOX
®
?
Treatment with BOTOX
®
can typically be repeated indefinitely. BOTOX
®
has been used for over 10 years worldwide.
Acceptable safety in long-term treatment has been well established.
Coastal Family Health
®
injections may be less dramatic than the first injection. Changes in Changes occurring with subsequent BOTOX response may require dose adjustment. This may be required due to the changes in the activity level of the muscle or additional muscles becoming involved
Is BOTOX
®
a new treatment?
No. BOTOX
® has been used for over 15 years in thousands of patients worldwide. The American Academy of
Neurology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and National Institutes of Health have recognised BOTOX
®
(Botulinum Toxin Type A) as a valuable treatment.
What side effects may be experienced when using BOTOX
®
?
All medications have some side effects. With BOTOX
®
, side effects are usually transient and mild to moderate in nature. Some people notice temporary weakness of muscles or discomfort at the injection site. Generally side effects are mild and transient.
Adverse reactions experienced in the treatment of frown lines include -
Headache - 9.3%
Drooping eye lid – 1-3%
Injection site pain/burning/stinging – 2.5%
Facial pain – 2.5%
Redness at the injection site – 1.7%
Local muscle weakness – 1.7%
Injection site swelling – 1.5%
Localised bruising - 1.0%
Skin tightness – 1.0%
Numbness – 1.0%
Nausea – 1.0%
In clinical use there have been reports of generalised weakness and muscle aches which may possibly be related to systemic absorption and systemic effects of BOTOX
®
.

BOTOX
®
is contra-indicated in
Individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation – particularly egg white.
Patients with myasthenia gravis or Eaton Lambert Syndrome.
The presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s).
Pregnancy - If BOTOX
® is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while being treated with BOTOX
® the patient should be apprised of the potential risks, including abortion or foetal malformations.
Lactation
After the administration of BOTOX
®
it is very important to aggressively use the treated muscle(s) for 1 hour after the procedure. Doing so increases the effect of the BOTOX
®
.
It is vital not to lie down for 3 hours after administration or to massage or manipulate the injected areas. Doing so may cause the BOTOX
® to spread into areas which should not be treated and may encourage a ptosis (drooping eye lid).
