NEBRASKA CZECHS OF WILBER SCHOLARSHIP

ELIGIBILITY: A graduating senior of the Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools who, during the past four years in high school has made significant contributions to the community in furthering Czech heritage. Ethnic background, class standing, and school activities are not a factor in this scholarship.

APPLICATION: Applicant is to submit a cover letter and resume, including class rank and

GPA, to the high school counselor. Applications will be provided to the current president of the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber.

Contributions to furthering Czech heritage shall include the following areas of activities:

1. ART: Showing personal art work and/or helping with the art show; promoting Czech culture through the design of and/or wearing of costumes at functions designed to promote the heritage, etc.

2. DECORATIONS: Helping with displays that depict Czech culture, at home, in the downtown business area, building decorations, painting of fireplugs, posts, etc.

3. DANCING: Participation in folk dancing groups such as the Beseda group, promoting the polka, etc.

4. FLOAT: Helping with construction of, modification of, a Czech float, taking part as a rider on a Czech float, etc.

5. FOOD: Help with preparation, serving, or demonstrations of food at Czech activities or during Czech Days.

6. INFORMATION: Promoting Czech heritage functions, working in the information booth, or promoting the heritage at any other activity, etc.

7. MUSEUM: Participation in music groups that depict Czech culture, etc.

8. PAGEANT: Helping with or participating in the annual pageant.

9. MUSIC: Participation in music groups that depict Czech culture, etc.

10. PROMOTION: Helping with raffle ticket sales including booster trips, distribution of posters, taking part in TV or radio broadcasts, being Czech Royalty and taking part in parades and other social functions, etc.

A graduating senior of the Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools who is at least

50% Czech and ranks in the top 10% of their graduating class.

Preference will be given to those who plan to enter the College of

Engineering and Technology at UNL, but application to any University of

Nebraska campus will suffice.

If no qualified candidates are available from the Wilber-Clatonia Public

Schools then others will be sought from Saline county.

Applicant is to submit a cover letter, which includes information about your Czech lineage, and a resume, including class rank and

Any graduating senior of the Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools who has been a dues paying roster member of the Wilber-Clatonia FFA Chapter during all four years of high school. This scholarship can be used in any number of ways for self-improvement. It is not limited to the Agriculture field.

A graduating senior of the Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools who has at least one parent being a dues paying member of the Wilber-Clatonia FFA

Alumni Chapter by May 1 of the year prior to the student member’s graduation. (Example: must be a member by May 1 of 2010 if student member is graduating from high school in 2011.) Applicant must have a grade point average of “B” or higher; ag related field of study is preferred, but not required and be enrolled as a full-time student in a college/university. Funds will be paid directly to the college/university and recipient may choose to use the funds over the first two years of their education. FFA member must have applied for the State FFA Degree and submit his/her State FFA Degree application in addition to the scholarship application. If there are no qualified candidates, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Applicant must complete the scholarship application and submit his/her

State FFA Degree application along with the scholarship application.

Include one letter of recommendation from someone other than the FFA advisor or family member. The recommendation is to be placed in a sealed envelope to be opened by the scholarship committee. Applicants may submit up to two pages of photos illustrating their SAE projects or

FFA involvement. Only complete applications will be considered for the scholarship.

In recognition of Lumir Karpisek and Jim Emal’s long and dedicated service to the Wilber Lions Club, a scholarship has been established in their names.

A graduating senior of the Wilber-Clatonia Public Schools. The recipient must attend a post secondary school the year following graduation from high school. Qualifying schools of high education include accredited colleges, universities, two year vocational schools, and schools of nursing.

Applicant is to submit a cover letter and resume, including class rank and

GPA, to the high school counselor. Include your educational plans, past community/school accomplishments, and the extent of your financial needs for furthering your education.

The application must be accompanied by a 300-500 word story entitled “Community Awareness – My Responsibility as a Citizen.”

The recipient’s story will be published in the local newspaper. The scholarship will not be awarded solely on the basis of this story.
