It is a modern Japanese martial art, and a tool for daily life. The goal of aikido is to solve problems by finding peaceful solutions wherever possible. Aikido philosophy shows students how to avoid direct opposition when attacked. Aikido techniques follow this principle by teaching students to move with the attacker to redirect his movement and neutralize the attack. The same principle can be applied to non-physical attacks at work or at home. Aikido is different from other martial arts. For this reason, it appeals to a wide variety of people. The movements are natural and do not require extraordinary skill or flexibility. Small people can become good aikidoists, because the techniques never meet strength with strength. Women can participate on equal terms with men. The aikido philosophy does not preclude religious people from practicing. Aikido has a very low injury rate. There is no competition. Age is not a barrier to improvement. Real skill in aikido lies in coordinating mind and body, and many people find this a worthwhile and fascinating goal. Benefits of regular training include increased concentration, calmness, confidence, balance, self-awareness and coordination. Goal To give students an understanding of how to apply aikido techniques and philosophy to everyday interactions; to offer basics for new students and continuing training for students who wish to progress to more advanced levels.
