Visitors arrive at Kid’s World entertainment park according to an exponential interarrival time distribution with mean 2.5 minutes. The travel time from the entrance to the ticket window is normally distributed with mean of three minutes and standard deviation of 0.5 minute. At the ticket window, visitors wait in a single line until one of six cashiers is available to serve them. The time for the purchase of tickets is normally distributed with mean of five minutes and standard deviation of one minute. After purchasing tickets, the visitors go to their respective gates to enter the park. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Run the simulation model for 200 hours to determine. a) The average and maximum length of the ticketing queue. b) The average number of customers completing ticketing per hour. c) The average utilization of the cashiers. d) Do you recommended that management add more cashiers? Running the simulation model (LAB6.1) the results are the following: a) The average and maximum length of the ticketing queue are 0.0088 and 1 visitors b) The average number of customers completing ticketing per hour are 16.07. c) The average utilization of the cashiers are: 50%, 45% and 37% for cashier 1, 2 and 3. Running the model LAB6.1. The results are according to the following graph of locations utilization, where we can see how the aisle o the road from the entrance to the ticket window, becomes a queue. . d) Do you recommended that management add more cashiers? Not, this is not a good recommendation since only three cashiers are used and the other three are idle. 2. A consultant recommended that six individual queues be formed at the ticket window (one for each cashier) instead of the common queue. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Run the simulation model for 200 hours to determine. I did not built the corresponding model since for any queue system, no matter how the interarrivals and service time are, it is better to attend the costumers by a single line instead of independent lines. 3. At the Southern California Airline’s traveler check-in facility, three types of customers arrive: passengers with e-ticket (Type E), passenger with paper ticket (Type T), and passengers that need to purchase ticket (Type P) The interaarrival distribution and the service times for these passengers are given in the table. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Run the simulation model for 2000 hours. If each type of passenger is served by separate gate agents, determine the following: a) The average and maximum length of the three queues. b) The average number of the customers of each type completing check-in procedures per hour. c) The average utilization of the gate agents. d) Would you recommended one single line for check-in for all three types of travelers? Discus the pros and cons for such a change. Running the simulation model LAB6.3 shown in the appendix, we got the following fesults: LAB6.3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------General Report Output from C:\ProMod4\models\LAB6.3.MOD Date: Nov/13/2003 Time: 11:40:29 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------Scenario : Normal Run Replication : 1 of 1 Simulation Time : 2000 hr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------LOCATIONS Location Name -------Linea1 Linea2 Linea3 Check1 Check2 Check3 Average Scheduled Total Minutes Hours Capacity Entries Per Entry --------- -------- ------- --------2000 999999 21826 2.131121 2000 999999 11301 14.263030 2000 999999 7542 18.006205 2000 1 21826 2.996429 2000 1 11299 8.000688 2000 1 7542 11.966399 Average Maximum Current Contents Contents Contents % Util --------------------------0.387615 9 0 0.00 1.34322 15 2 0.00 1.13169 11 0 0.00 0.545 1 0 54.50 0.753331 1 1 75.33 0.752088 1 1 75.21 a) The average and maximum length of the three queues are:. Raja & Rani, a fancy restaurant in Santa Clara, Hold a maximum of 100 diners. Customers arrive according to an exponential distribution with a mean of 35 minutes. Customers stay in the restaurant according to a triangular distribution with a minimum of 30 minutes, a maximum of 60 minutes, and a mode of 45 minutes. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. a) Beginning empty, how long is it before the restaurant fills? b) What is the total number of diners entering the restaurant before it fills? c) What is the utilization of the restaurant? 5. United Electronics manufactures small custom electronic assemblies. There are four stations through which the part must be processed: assembly, soldering, painting, and inspection. Orders arrive with and exponential interarrival distribution (mean 20 minutes). The process time distributions are shown in the table. The soldering operation can be performed on three jobs at a time. Painting can be done on four jobs at a time. Assembly and inspection are performed on one job at a time. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Simulate this manufacturing system for 100 days, eight hours each day. Collect and print statistics on the utilization of each station, associated queues, and the total number of jobs manufactured during each eight-hour shift (average). All the statistics are shown in the appendix LAB6.5. However, in order to answer part of the question I show in the following graph the utilization of the location. It can be seen that the painting process which is the most consuming time, has the higher utilization. The following table show the average length of the queues and the average time/ part in the queue: Parameter Average Time/Part Average Queue Length Assembly 11.44 0.64 Soldering 0.86 0.045 Painting 2.34 0.11 Inspection 2.92 0.12 The total number of jobs manufactured for a 8 hour shift is, on the average: 18:27. 6. Consider the Exercise 5 with the following enhancements. Ten percent of all finished assemblies are sent back to soldering for rework after inspection, five percent are sent back to assembly for rework after inspection, and one percent of all assemblies fail to pass and are scrapped. Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Simulate this manufacturing system for 100 days, eight hours each day. Collect and print statistics on the utilization of each station, associated queues, total number of jobs assembled number of assemblies sent for rework to assembly and soldering, and the number of assemblies scrapped during each eight-hour shift (average). The percentages of utilization of the locations area: 72.95% for Assembly, 65.67% for Soldering, 65.87% for Painting and 39.26 for Inspection. The following table show the average length of the queues and the average time/ part in the queue: Parameter Average Time/Part Average Queue Length Assembly 13.13 0.78 Soldering 2.53 0.14 Painting 4.66 0.27 Inspection 4.79 0.23 The total of assemblies finished per shift are: 17.49. 7. Small appliances are assembled in four stage (Centers 1,2, and 3 and Inspection) at Pomona Assembly Shop. After each assembly step the appliance is inspected or tested and if a defect is found, it must be corrected and then checked again. The assemblies arrive at a constant rate of one assembly per minute. The times to assemble, test, and correct defects are normally distributed. The mean and standard deviation of the times to assemble, inspect, and correct defects, as well as the likelihood of an assembly error, are shown in the following table. If an assembly is found defective, the defect is corrected and it is inspected again. After a defect is corrected, the likelihood of another defect being found is the same as during the first inspection. We assume in this model that an assembly defect is eventually corrected and then it is passed on to the next station. Simulate for one year (2000 hours) and determine the number of good appliances shipped in a year. The corresponding simulation model is LAB6.7. The statistics of the run are shown in appendix LAB6.7 where we can see that the total production is 24,000 parts. It can be shown also in the variable for counting the production of the model. 8. Salt Lake City Electronics manufactures small custom communication equipment. To different job types are to be processed with the following manufacturing cell. The necessary data are given in the table. Simulate the system for 100 days, eight hours each day, to determine the average number of jobs waiting for different operations, number of jobs of each type finished each day, average cycle time for each type of job, and the average cycle time for all jobs. 9. Six dump trucks at the DumpOnMe facility in Riverside are used to haul coal from the entrance of a small mine to the railroad. Figure L6.39 provides a schematic of the dump truck operation. Each truck is loaded by one of two loaders. After loading, a truck immediately moves to the scale to be weighed as soon as possible. Both the loaders and the scale have a firs-come, firs-served waiting line (or queue) for trucks. Travel time from a loader to the scale is considered negligible. After being weighed, a truck begins travel time (during which time the truck unload), and then after ward returns to the loader queue. The distributions of loading time, weighed time, and travel time are shown in the table. a) Create a simulation model, with animation, of this system. Simulate for 100 days, eight hours each day. b) Collect statistics to estimate the loaded and scale utilization (percentage of time busy). c) About how many trucks are loaded each day on average? 10. At the Pilot Pen Company, a molding machine produces pen barrels of three different colors-red, blue, and green- in the ratio of 3:2:1. The molding time is triangular (3,4,6) minutes per barrel. The barrels go to a filling machine where ink of appropriate color is filled at the rate of 20 pens per hour (exponentially distributed). Another molding machine makes caps of three different colors-red, blue, and green-in the ratio of 3:2:1. The molding time is triangular (2,3,4) minutes per cap. At the next station, caps and filled barrels of matching colors are joined together. Simulate for 300 hours. Find the average number of pens produced per hour. Collect statistics on the utilization of the molding machine and the joining equipment. 11. Customers arrive at the NoWaitBurger hamburger stand with an interarrival time that is exponentially distributed with a mean of one minute. Out of 10 customers five buy a hamburger and a drink, three buy a hamburger, and two buy just a drink. One server handless the hamburger while another handless the drink. A person buying both items needs to wait in line for both serves. The time it takes to serve a customer is normally distributed with a mean of 70 seconds for each item. Simulate for100 days, eight hours each day. Collect statistics on the number of customers served each day, size of the queue, and utilization of the servers. What changes would you suggest to make the system more efficient? For answering this problem I used two model. One for the original problem statement, LAB6.11.a and other for looking to efficient the system, LAB6.11.b. The changes for this model is to use three lines, one attended for Clerk1 who served only customers buying hamburgers and drinks the other two lines are attended for Clerk2 for the customers who bay Hamburger or Drink. The results of the two models are shown in the following table. Parameter Average Cycle Time/ Customer Average Waiting in Queue/Customer(Q1) Average Waiting in Queue/Customer(Q2) Average Waiting in Queue/Customer(Q3) Percentage of Utilization Clerk1 Percentage of Utilization Clerk2 Percentage of Occupation/Customer Customers Attended /Day Model LAB6.11.a 1059 sec. 1754 358 49 98.22 74.25 12.02 445 Model LAB6.11.b 1234 2398 51 44 98.56 57.55 9.7 438 The number shown, less waiting time, more customers attended , etc, that the change proposed do not make better than the actual system. Other change that efficient the system, in terms of the service to the customers, is to reduce the attending time of the clerks. 12. Workers who work at the Detroit TooINDie plant must check out tools from a tool crib. Workers arrive according to an exponential distribution with a mean time between arrivals of five minutes. At present, three tool crib clerks staff the tool crib. The time to serve a worker is normally distributed with a mean of 10 minutes and a standard deviation of two minutes. Compare the following servicing methods. Simulate for a 24hour period and collect data. a) Workers form a single queue, choosing the next available tool crib clerk. b) Workers enter the shortest queue (each clerk has his-her own queue). c) Workers chose one of three queues at random. For this system I built the model LAB6.12 for a single line. After, the model as modified to take into account three lines whit different routing rule. For question a I used the FIRST Available Rule. For question b I used the MOST Rule. For question c I used the RANDOM Rule. The following table shown the results of running the three models: Parameter Av. Waiting Time/Customer Av. Comparing, the three lines models, the model using the MOST available capacity location routing rule, LAB6.12.b, is better. Just compare the cycle time of 16.47 min given by the model LAB6.12.b vs. the cycle time of 19.79 min given by the model LAB6.12.c.
