GUIDANCE
_______________________________________________________________________________________
1. When driving in rain and thunderstorms:
 Reduce speed.
 Increase following distance to at least 4 seconds.
 Use windshield wipers and headlights.
 Use defroster to keep windows clear.
 Be aware that roads are most slippery in light rain and when rain first starts to fall.
 Brake gently on wet roads to avoid skids.
 Slow down for large puddles if you can’t avoid them.
 Pull over if rain is so heavy you can’t see well. Also pull over in a hail storm.
2. When driving in fog, drivers should:
 Reduce speed.
 Use low beams.
 Increase following distance.
 Avoid passing.
 Use road lines as a guide.
 Get off the road if they can’t see well enough to drive safely and wait for fog to lift.
3. If you go into a skid, stay calm and ease your foot off the gas. Carefully steer in the direction you want the
front of your vehicle to go. This procedure, known as “steering into the skid,” will bring the back end of your
vehicle in line with the front. Once the skid is under control, continue at a low speed until you are over the
slippery patch. Keep your foot off the brake unless you have anti-lock brakes. Check the owner’s manual for
instructions on using anti-lock brakes in a skid.
Reducing speed in wet or icy conditions and avoiding fast turns can help prevent skids.
4. Precautions for driving in extreme wind include:
 Reducing speed to improve vehicle stability and control l Keeping both hands on the wheel
 Increasing following distance
 Being careful when passing
5. Drivers who encounter flooded roads should turn back and find another route to their destination. Driving
through flood waters is extremely dangerous. It’s often hard to be certain how deep the water is. Drivers can
lose control of a vehicle driving too fast through as little as 6 inches of water. As little as 18 to 24 inches of
water will make most vehicles float. Moving water is even more hazardous.
