SANDY VAN VUUREN
1. UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
A full teaching portfolio for undergraduate teaching is available on request with a
detailed record of student assessments which has been reviewed by independent sources.
Sixty-eight students have been supervised for the teaching period 2005-2014 with respect
to their research elective special project (equivalent to honors status).
2. POSTGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have supervised 26 students to the completion of their postgraduate degree. I am
currently supervising eight postgraduate students. In addition, 40 postgraduate students
from various teaching institutions (University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of
Technology, Yaounde University- Cameroon and University of KwaZulu-Natal) having
microbiological aspects in their projects have been supervised. In addition, I am host to
two post-doctoral fellows.
3. RESEARCH
My field of interest is microbial viability studies but predominantly in the investigation of
antimicrobial agents with specific reference to medicinal plants used in African
traditional healing. Correlation between chemical composition and antimicrobial
activities as well as the role of synergy and antagonism within the microbial context is
also undertaken.

I presently have a C3 NRF rating.

Of the 91 publications (all ISI accredited) authored, two have been awarded the
best publication award in the years 2005 and 2006 at the International Conference
on Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences (ICPPS).

Of the 135 conference contributions (52 international and 83 national), five poster
prizes and 20 podium prizes have been awarded. In addition to this, I have been
awarded the Aspen Gold Medal for the best PhD presentation at the University of
Johannesburg in the years 2002 and again in 2005. See Appendix 1

Three international invited plenary lectures and several national key note lectures
have been given. See Appendix 1
4. REVIEW EXPERIENCE

I have served as a reviewer (over 150 invited reviews) for the following journals;
South African Journal of Botany, South African Journal of Chemistry, Journal of
Ethnopharmacology, Journal of Science, Journal of Essential Oil Research,

I presently serve on the editorial board for South African Journal of Botany and
international Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal.
I have served as an examiner for 12 Masters Dissertations, two PhD’s and several
grant proposals (both national and international).
