CURRICULUM VITAE: (updated October 2014) SANDY VAN VUUREN 1. UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE A full teaching portfolio for undergraduate teaching is available on request with a detailed record of student assessments which has been reviewed by independent sources. Sixty-eight students have been supervised for the teaching period 2005-2014 with respect to their research elective special project (equivalent to honors status). 2. POSTGRADUATE TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have supervised 26 students to the completion of their postgraduate degree. I am currently supervising eight postgraduate students. In addition, 40 postgraduate students from various teaching institutions (University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology, Yaounde University- Cameroon and University of KwaZulu-Natal) having microbiological aspects in their projects have been supervised. In addition, I am host to two post-doctoral fellows. 3. RESEARCH My field of interest is microbial viability studies but predominantly in the investigation of antimicrobial agents with specific reference to medicinal plants used in African traditional healing. Correlation between chemical composition and antimicrobial activities as well as the role of synergy and antagonism within the microbial context is also undertaken. I presently have a C3 NRF rating. Of the 91 publications (all ISI accredited) authored, two have been awarded the best publication award in the years 2005 and 2006 at the International Conference on Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences (ICPPS). Of the 135 conference contributions (52 international and 83 national), five poster prizes and 20 podium prizes have been awarded. In addition to this, I have been awarded the Aspen Gold Medal for the best PhD presentation at the University of Johannesburg in the years 2002 and again in 2005.
