Job Summary & Person Specification Job Title: Museum Development Officer, Hampshire Solent Department: Innovation Lab Branch / Section: Winchester Job Type: Full time (or possibly 4 days) Temporary contract to 31 March 2018 Salary: £26,541-£32,034 per annum (pro rata is parttime) Job Purpose: Provide professional development advice, information and support to approximately 70 Accredited museums, and a small number aspiring to Accreditation, within the Hampshire Solent area (Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton) to raise their standards of organisational health, collections management and user services. Ensure that the museums have access to tailored advice and support and are able to benefit from the wide range of regional and national opportunities on offer. Provide interventions to strengthen future sector sustainability and enable organisational development. Develop and maintain effective relationships with museums across the Hampshire Solent area, local, regional and national agencies and other stakeholders. The post is hosted by Hampshire Cultural Trust. The South East Museum Development Programme in Hampshire Solent is delivered by a team of one Cultural Partnerships Officer and one Museum Development Officer. It forms part of the regional South East Museum Development Programme which is managed by a consortium consisting of Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton and Hove (the lead partner), Hampshire Cultural Trust, Oxfordshire County Museums Service and Chatham Historic Dockyard. Page 1 of 4 Main Responsibilities: Coordinate and deliver museum development services, successfully implementing the Hampshire Solent activity plan within the regional South East Museum Development Programme. Contribute to the successful delivery of the South East activity plan as a member of the Museum Development Working Group and through Theme Lead responsibilities as required. Work with the Museum Development Coordination Group and the Hampshire Solent Museum Development Advisory Panel to inform the programme, identify local museum needs and set priorities. Provide performance and financial reports and updates to internal and external stakeholders and Arts Council England. Undertake advisory site visits, providing strategic and practical advice and support to museum staff, trustees and volunteers to improving their museums’ sustainability. Provide access to information, support and advice on all sector related matters. Create and publish regular Hampshire Solent Museum Development newsletters and contribute to regional and national newsletters and publications. Share information about museum development activities using social media. Develop and maintain contacts lists of Hampshire Solent museums, in order to support effective communication between the programme, museums and regional and national stakeholders. Maintain the regional contacts, interactions and impacts database, and website content management systems, developing content, collating data and images as required ensuring activity is communicated consistently and effectively to stakeholders. Support museums for applying for Accreditation and other sector related schemes and standards. Build capacity in the sector by providing skills development opportunities for staff and volunteers. Coordinate and deliver a programme of events and other activities enabling museums to share good practice. Work with the Cultural Partnerships Office to develop and commission short-term or long-term projects that enable museums to address key needs and priorities. Support and encourage local museum networks and forums to become self sustaining. Work with the Cultural Partnerships Officer to facilitate and broker partnerships with museums and other organisations. Represent and promote the interests of museums in the Hampshire and Solent area at a local, regional and national level. Page 2 of 4 Advise on local sector needs and development priorities and produce case studies and strategic information. Develop and maintain excellent partnerships with key stakeholders, sector institutions and other regional, national and local stakeholders, to enhance the impact and profile of the Museum Development Programme regionally and nationally. Procure and manage the contribution of specialist providers to deliver aspects of the programme. Contribute to the effective management of the Hampshire Solent Museum Development budget and manage delegated budgets for specific projects, in line with Hampshire Cultural Trust processes. Invite, assess and process applications for grants and other support opportunities, ensuring that resources are invested in such a way as to enhance the resilience of individual museums and the wider sector. To manage any support posts and volunteers in accordance with the Hampshire Cultural Trust procedures. Contribute to the implementation of the South East Museum Development Programme Communications Strategy. Attend occasional ‘out of hours’ events e.g. evenings and weekends, as appropriate to job purpose, with due notice.
