NCCER Plumbing Trainee Guide Level 1: Published by
Prentice Hall 2005 Edition 3 and additional course
handouts related to topic.
The (NCCER) National Center for Construction Education and Research is a nationally
recognized standard curriculum for more than 37 different crafts such as carpentry,
electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulating, pipeline maintenance, welding, heavy equipment
operations, field safety, and construction management.
Course Description:
This course will provide students with the basic theory of installing a garbage disposal
unit in a basic kitchen cabinet. Special tools in connecting drain/waste piping and venting
systems from a house unit will be used. The students will review safety issues related to
the proper handling of plumbing tools (hand and power) in the installation process.
Instructor will manage class within proper safety standards and suggested manufacturing
specification of installing proper drywall and insulation.
Course Goals:
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge and practical experience in installing
garbage disposals. Students’ understanding and familiarity with installing garbage
disposals will support village construction.
Instructional Methods:
Instructional method will be a combination of face-to-face instruction/lecture, small
group discussions, and practical application in the field. Classroom environment may
consist of work tables/desks, overhead projector/LCD projector, wipe boards, TV/VCR,
and standard instructional equipment dealing with power tools, drawings, and blueprints.
Student Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
Students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic
operations of disposal units; be able
to read, understand, and interpret
proper plumbing drawing/diagrams
(isometric, oblique pictorial,
orthographic, and schematic) that
visualize the installation process.
2. Identify the safety issues connected
with garbage disposal and
drain/waste systems under
manufactures specifications for
professional workmanship and
ethical standard.
3. Demonstrate the ability to safely
connect electrical power supply to
an operational unit.
4. Explain safety practices (hand and
power tools) and ethical practices
related to installing a garbage
disposal unit in a basic kitchen
cabinet.

Total points for the course will be assigned and weighted based on the following:
Attendance/ Participation …………………….. 15%
Student Activity/Practice………………………..25%
Return Demonstration for Skill Mastery………..30%
Exam ……………………………………………30%
Attendance/Participation (15%) means the student is in class, has read the
required material, and is active participating in the classroom session.
Student Activity/Practice (25%) means a group of students will practice installing
a garbage disposal unit under the kitchen sink. They will align piping to waste and
drain components and rehearse connecting electrical power supplies.
Return Demonstration (30%) means under the observation of the instructor, the
student will demonstrate the proper techniques to install a garbage disposal unit
under the kitchen sink. This process will require the student to align and install
piping to waste and drain components, connecting to electrical power supply, and
connecting dishwasher piping to garbage disposal unit. Students will
demonstrate safe hand and power tool use during the installations process.
Exam (30%) is the evaluation tool the instructor will use to determine final
mastery of a skill.
