DIRECT PATIENT CARE JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Director, Medicine and Psychiatry Job Class: Grade: Dept/No: Reports To: 1133 69 Patient Care Administration/1401 Senior Vice President, Operations and Chief Nurse Executive Revised: April 2010 POSITION SUMMARY The Director, Medicine and Psychiatry, reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. Participates in the development of a strategic vision for Nursing; develops, implements, and promotes strategies for patient care delivery and hospital operations. Collaborates with medical leadership partner(s) to advance quality strategies, ensure a professional work environment, facilitate timeliness of services, and enhance patient satisfaction. Oversees the development of clinical and financial systems and nursing systems resources. Oversees the development and implementation of capacity expansion plans. Models effective leadership behaviors to achieve organizational outcomes. Licensed Registered Nurse, eight to ten years nursing experience with demonstrated progressive responsibility in management/administration. RESPONSIBILITIES - Essential Functions and How They Are Accomplished 1. Coordinates and integrates nursing resources and nursing systems. Specific Performance Standards: 1.1 Provides information and assistance in developing and coordinating resources to meet the changing needs of the organization. 1.2 Recommends revisions to systems within Nursing Services to assure efficient operations. 1.3 Coordinates Hospital Operation Administrators, Central Staffing and Bed assignment to assure effective operations and patient throughput across all departments. 1.4 Develops, implements and promotes strategies for patient care delivery facilitating positive patient outcomes. . 2. Creates an atmosphere conducive to participative management that fosters autonomous practice and decision making within a climate of team building and group interaction. Directs the design of budget, information, and staffing systems to assure the integration of these processes in the development and monitoring of Nursing systems and operations. Specific Performance Standards: 3.1 Provides information to and collaborates with the Directors in the development of unit budgets. 3.2 Provides assistance in the development of reports to assist management in budget planning and analysis. 3.3 Oversees staffing systems and supports to meet the needs of the organization. 4. Directs staff in the design and implementation of transition planning to meet the needs of the organization. Specific Performance Standards: Oversees teams related to NMH Transition Plan vision, strategy, programs and NMH operations and systems 4.1 4.2 Assumes responsibility for the patient focused performance improvement process, engaging staff participation in multidisciplinary activities conducted for the purpose of improving the quality and reducing the cost of patient care. 4.3 Collaborates with Directors to assure integrated programs within Nursing Services. 4.4 Directs the development of programs to meet the goals of Patient Care. 4.5 Identifies own learning needs and maintains professional and technical competence. Defines goals and pursues opportunities for professional growth. Progresses toward goal attainment. 4.6 Participates in professional activities and organizations. 5. Actively contributes to the overall direction of Nursing Services.
