POSITION: STREET MAINTENANCE I DEPARTMENT: STREET JOB DESCRIPTION Full Time (40 hours/week with occasional overtime) PAY RANGE: 8.84/hr. FLSA: NON-EXEMPT REQUIREMENT This position requires a clean driving record and at least a class B CDL. A class A CDL is preferred. General Description: Assists in pothole patching and cut-outs which involves the pothole patching truck, as well as trimming trees, cleaning drainage areas and other projects as assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, as well as other duties as assigned. Patch potholes using shovel, tamper, level loop and oil sprayer Make cut-outs using jack hammer, shovel tamper, level loop and oil sprayer Make driveway tie-ins Drive to pick up asphalt Load asphalt Flag traffic as necessary Trimming trees Clearing brush Cleaning drainage ditches Other duties as assigned Additional Duties: Clean the truck using soap canister and water sponges Check the truck’s fluid level Write nightly report Environmental Factors: Ability to work in inclement weather, including extreme heat and humidity at or near 100% during certain times of the year. Hot asphalt is 180 – 200 degrees, as well as freezing temperatures and below. Vibration of hands, arms, shoulders, back when operating jack hammer and tampers, in a very high noise level. Machines, Tools and Equipment: Shovel, pick, hydraulic and air jack hammer, tamper, level loop, motorized tamper, chainsaw, small ½ ton roller, sprayers. Protective Equipment Required: Leather boots, hard hat, special clothing, gloves, eye protection, ear protection and safety vests. Physical Demands: Walking/Standing – to patch holes, make cut-outs, and make driveway tie-ins using shovel, tamper, level-loop and oil sprayer; clean the trucks and flag traffic. Handling – Operate the tamper, use the shovel, level loop and oil sprayer, chainsaw. Untie the tarp and fold it to load asphalt, guide the spray wand while cleaning truck, write nightly reports. Lifting – Bar to load asphalt, 2-26 lbs; shovel to carry loose asphalt and spray wand to clean the truck, 31 lbs; tamper and jackhammer- 60-100lbs. Carrying – Asphalt in shovel, 22-26 lbs; soap canister, up to 31 lbs Bending – To use the level loop, tamper, jack hammer and oil sprayer; to remove the bar while loading asphalt. Twisting – To use the shovel and put the asphalt to the side and in bins. Vision – To drive pothole patching truck and write reports. Climbing – Into and out of the truck. Pushing/Pulling/Reaching – To pull up jack hammer, level asphalt, load truck. Level loop to level asphalt, the tamper to tamp asphalt, push on brake, 20lbs of exertion. Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or GED 6 months experience in the same job field. Valid Texas Drivers License, with at least Class B – CDL Driver’s license. Class A preferred. Also, preferably a Defensive Driving Certificate. Experience in forming and laying concrete preferred. Cognitive Skills: Reading and writing to be able to follow written orders, complete nightly reports. Should have the ability to read and follow street maps and street signs, as well as the capability to follow specific directions and instructions. The ability to work in a team environment as a cohesive member of the unit is essential. Interpersonal Skills: Must be able to relate to other people beyond giving and receiving instructions: a) Get along with co-workers without exhibiting behavior extremes b) Perform work activities in a team setting requiring negotiating, instruction, supervision, persuading, or speaking with others c) Respond appropriately to constructive criticism from a supervisor CRIMINAL HISTORY, DRUG TEST and DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK REQUIRED.
