Walton
Charity is celebrating 800
years of history this year. The oldest
charity, which now forms part of the
Walton on Thames Charity, can trace its
origins back to some time before 1212.
The development and amalgamation of
the eleven original charities over the
centuries has been researched and will
be commemorated throughout the latter
part of 2011.
Two Centuries in one month.
There have been two 100th birthday
celebrations in the past few months.
Dee Coles celebrated her 100th birthday
on 5th January and Minerva McIntosh
reached 100 years on Valentine’s Day.
Both ladies celebrated in style with
cake, flowers, friends and family and of
course a letter from the Queen. The
Mayor of Elmbridge Barry Cheyne
visited both ladies and is pictured below
with Dee at Mayfield
Funding has been secured from The
Heritage Lottery, the Robert Phillips
Trust and RC Sherriff for the work. This
includes conservation of old documents,
research and production of the history of
the Charity, an oral history project, an
exhibition at the River House Barn, a
Church Service at St Mary’s Church, a
community luncheon and a dinner
dance.
“I GIVE AND BEQUEATH” As part of
the 800th anniversary celebrations
David Nash, a local historian and trustee
of the Charity have compiled a
comprehensive history of the Walton On
Thames Charity. The book traces the
origins and developments of the
Charities through the centuries.
This has now
been published
and copies will
soon be available at
to purchase at
the Book Launch
on 1st June. All
proceeds will go
towards the work of
of the Charity.
FUNDING
SUCCESS
FOR
ALLOTMENTS Walton Charity has
successfully secured £10,000 of funding
from the Awards for All Big Lottery Fund
for a project to rejuvenate part of the
Burhill allotment site which has become
unusable. The project has several aims
and is set to clear overgrown and
unusable allotment land which backs
onto the banks of the River Mole. The
main aim is to clear the land leading
down to the river to create useable
community space. The Charity wants to
have more allotments for community
use, better access to the river for
anglers, an apiary with beekeeping
classes and possibly a nature walk with
wild flowers, and an outdoor classroom.

The people who are Walton on Thames Charity
Welcome to our regular feature about the most important part of the Charity - its people –
residents, beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, supporters and trustees.
Stephen Lintott and Philip Harding are volunteer gardeners at
Walton Charity’s two sheltered housing sites – Mayfield and
Fenner House. Stephen has been volunteering with us for
almost two years and Philip joined the team a year ago.
Stephen lives in Hersham and Philip lives nearby in Walton.
They both say that the “feel good factor” is important and they
enjoy making a contribution to the appearance of the two sites,
which both have well maintained gardens. They usually come
in twice a week to carry out a variety of tasks to keep the
gardens (and especially the weeds!) under control. They both
agree that the residents are very appreciative of the work they
do and that working as part of a successful team is particularly
enjoyable. Stephen also helped in the preparations for the very
popular community day last year, handing out flyers and
putting up marquees on the day. Philip has an NVQ in Land
Based Studies (Entry Level in Horticulture) which he acquired
at Nescot College. He enjoys working at both sites, but says
that the gardens at Fenner House are his favourite.
And other news……..
UPDATE ON HYLTON LODGE
The Charity has announced that the Hylton
Lodge site has been sold, subject to planning,
to Shanly Homes. The site remains under the
ownership and management of the Charity until
such time as the sale is completed. Shanly
Homes are consulting local residents and
stakeholders about the plans to develop
housing on the site.
“STREET PARTY” AT SHERWOOD
Plans are underway for an event at Sherwood
House to celebrate the Royal Wedding on 29th
April. This will take the form of an “indoor street
party” where residents will be able to watch the
wedding on a big screen TV and enjoy the day in
a celebratory atmosphere.
Plans are also underway for a ‘Big Lunch’ for
residents and staff of all the Charity’s houses on
Sunday 5th June to celebrate the 800 years.
