Analysis of the verb frequencies of the most commonly used verbs in the ICLE,
contrasting data from seven different European languages- among which is Spanishand a Native Speaker Corpus. Most of the examples of the article refer to Finnish but
the general findings are applicable to the rest of the languages analysed.
The author tries to find the reasons that lay behind the overuse and underuse of
some of the verbs with the highest frequencies in the ICLE Corpus to shed light on the
general characteristics of learner language and L1-transfer. He finally goes from these
verb frequencies to word frequencies in general to study their relationship with L1transfer.
