Writing style of manuscripts
This is a writing style for the “Transaction of Japan Fluid Power System Society” and “JFPS International
Journal of Fluid Power System”. The “Manuscript Template” is downloaded from website
http://www.jfps.jp/fluid_e/.
(A) Format of manuscript
1. The manuscripts should in principle be provided within 6 pages in printed form.
2. The papers should be arranged in the following order:
Title, Sub-title, Author names, Abstract of less than 300 words, Keywords, Introduction,
Nomenclature, Main body of text, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, References, Appendices. The
proper keywords up to 10 should be selected from the list on the website http://www.jfps.jp/fluid_e/.
3. The figures and tables should be inserted at the appropriate places in the text.
(B) Notes on the description of text
1. The manuscripts should be described in simple and comprehensible English.
2. Times New Roman with the following font sizes should be used:
(a) Title: 14 point, bold
(b) Subtitle: 12 point, bold
(c) Authors’ names: 12 point
(d) Abstract, keywords and text: 9 point
(e) Captions of figures and tables: 8 point
(f) Headings of sections: 10.5 point, bold
(g) Headings of subsections: 9 point, bold
For the names of authors, the given names and family names should be spelled with the family names
all capitalized. The title, subtitle, and authors’ names should be centered on the lines.
3. Authorized terminologies, definitions and symbols in technical terms should be used as much as
possible.
4. The units used in the paper should be the SI units.
5. For the headings in the text, numbers such as 1 or 2 should be assigned to sections (e.g.,
1.Introduction), and the headings should be located at the center of the line. Numbers such as 2.1 or
2.2 should be assigned to subsections, and the headings of subsections should be located at the left
head of the line.
(C) Notes on letter type of symbols and equations
1. Letters in italic type should be used for the following cases:
(a) Literal symbols signifying quantities, e.g. symbols for pressure, flow rate and displacement are
described, e.g., as p, Q and x, respectively.
(b) Literal symbols signifying a vector and matrix. For these quantities, boldfaced italic letters should
be used.
2. Letters in roman type should be used for the following cases:
(a) Literal symbols signifying the units, points, locations, articles such as MPa, m/s point A, etc.
(b) Imaginary unit symbol as ” j ”.
(c) Mathematical symbols such as log, exp, sin, etc.
3. In the quotation of an equation, the term “equation” should be shortened as “Eq.” provided that it is not
located at the head of a sentence.
(D) Notes on Figures and Tables
1. The numbers for the figures and tables are assigned such as Fig. 1 and Table 1, and their captions
should be described just behind the number.
2. Only the first letter of the first word in the caption of a figure or table should be capitalized.
3. In the quotations for a figure in the text, a shortened form such as Fig. 1 should be used. When a figure
is quoted at the head of a sentence, it should not be shortened.
4. For higher legibility, a proper margin should be assigned to the spaces between
(a) Figure/table and its caption
(b) Last line of the previous paragraph and a figure/table
(c) Figure/table and the first line of the successive paragraph
(E) Other Instructions
1. Consecutive numbers in a superscript form such as
1)
should be assigned to all the references cited in
the text, and the references should be stated at the end of the text. The style for a reference is as
follows.
(a) For a paper:
Number of reference) Names of authors (Family name, Given name): Title of a paper, Published
journal, Volume, Number, p.First page-last page (year)
Example:
1) Yuatsu, T. et al. :A Study of Performance Improvement of a Compressor, Transactions of the
Japan Fluid Power System Society, Vol.3, No.4, p.56-62 (2001)
(b) For a separate volume:
No. of reference) Names of authors (Family name, Given name): Title of a book, Publisher, p.First
page-last page (year).
Example:
2) Suzuki, I., Matsui, H., Matsuzaka, D.: Fundamentals of Water Hydraulic Control, New York
Press, p.123-124 (1970)
2. It is recommended that the authors avoid using footnotes except for the special footnotes with the
receipt date and the authors’ affiliations on the first page.
