GAJEWSKI, MD, PHD PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY AND DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE, SECTION OF HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY University of Chicago Chicago, Illinois PRESIDENT INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR BIOLOGICAL THERAPY OF CANCER MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN Dr. Gajewski attended Medical School at the University of Chicago, where he participated in the MD/PhD program from 1984-1991, working in the laboratory of Dr. Frank Fitch in Immunology. He then continued at Chicago to complete internship, residency, and fellow ship in Hematology/Oncology. During that time he continued post-doctoral work with Frank Fitch, and also went to the Ludwig Cancer Research Institute in Brussels for a post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Thierry Boon. In 1997, Dr. Gajewski joined the faculty at the University of Chicago with a joint appointment in Pathology and Hematology/Oncology. Through this arrangement, he has been able to pursue both basic laboratory research on T cell regulation and anti-tumor immune responses, and also clinical trials of immunotherapies and other interventions in patients with cancer, focusing on melanoma. Dr. Gajewski has published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters on these subjects, and continues an extremely active research program. Dr. Gajewski’s current position as Leader of the Immunology Program in the Cancer Center, and Director of Melanoma Oncology, position him well to catalyze a translational effort in cancer immunology that spans basic research through clinical trials. He has been involved in numerous NIH grant review panels, is Section Editor for the Journal of Immunology, has served on the Program Committee for AACR and ASCO, and has served on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Midwest Autumn Immunology Conference. He is also currently active on the IDSC task force, an NCI advisory committee on immunotherapeutic drugs. Dr. Gajewski has been recognized as recipient of a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Clinical Scientist Award for Translational research, as well as induction into the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Henry Kunkel Society.
