NORTHLAND HEALTH JOB SPECIFICATION for the position of NEPHROLOGIST MEDICAL SERVICES PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THE POSITION 1. To provide clinical service and direction in the subspecialty area of nephrology. 2. To provide specialist Nephrology care for both inpatients and outpatients of the Medical Service in Northland. RESPONSIBLE TO Group Manager, Medical and Surgical Services Clinical Director, Department of Medicine Acute care Clinical Leader Nephrology FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Works in co-operation with: Nurse Manager and multidisciplinary team, Renal Service Tertiary Renal Specialists and Referral Hospitals Other Physicians Nurse Manager, Team Leaders and Managers of the Medical Service Patients and family/whanau Chief Medical Advisor KEY RESULT AREAS 1. In collaboration with the Clinical Director, other Nephrology specialists and the Nurse Manager of renal unit, provide specialist Nephrology services. 1.1 Perform medical assessments on patient with end stage renal failure in accordance with the Northern Region ESRF Guidelines. 1.2 Supervise patient care on the ESRF programmes, including a regular review process as dictated by accepted best practice. 1.3 Provide assessment and management of patients with Kidney diseases. 1.4 Liaise regularly with tertiary referral services regarding aspects of patient care and for education purposes. Be available during work hours for telephone advice to General Practitioners and other medical staff. 1.5 1.6 Accept outpatient referrals for new and follow-up renal patients, as part of the outpatient service for Northland Health. 1.7 Provide regional visiting service to other peripheral sites, seeing outpatients and inpatient referrals. 1.8 1.9 1.10 1.11 In collaboration with the key renal medical staff and Nurse Manager, provide clinical direction for the Renal Service, including the development and review of policies and protocols specific to the Renal Unit. To set and maintain high quality standards of care for inpatient and outpatient care. Ensure all documentation and processes are clear and meet the regulations of Northland Health. In consultation with the Clinical Director, knowledge and skills development is ongoing and up to date with current trends. 2.1 Develop and maintain personal professional practice in accordance with RACP Maintenance of professional standards, legislative requirements, policies and guidelines. 2.2 2.3 Peer group supervision/networking is undertaken on a regular basis. Participate in the provision of supervision and training for the Registrars and House surgeons, Medical students, nursing staff and allied health professionals in the Inpatient and Outpatient services, community groups and agencies. Be involved in performance management which reflects the current environment and which is reviewed at least once annually. In accordance with Service delivery priorities develop special area of expertise consistent with own professional discipline and interests, and thereby act as a resource person for the Service. 2.4 2.5 3. In conjunction with the Clinical Director and Group Manager, contribute to the successful management, service planning and development of the Medical Service of Northland Health. 3.1 Along with the other specialist staff, provide clinical leadership for Renal Unit and nephrology services in general in Northland. 3.2 3.3 Develop and maintain liaison with tertiary referral hospital and tertiary specialists. Contribute to the planning and provision of Medical Service and particular aspects relating to renal services in Northland, including in-centre, home and community based dialysis services. Attend planning or management meetings as requested. Prepare reports as required. Quality Assurance and Audit. 4.1 Ensure all documentation and processes are clear and meet the regulations of HHS and other purchasing agencies requirements. 4.2 Participate in meetings that relate to the improvement of service quality, health & safety, communication, de-briefing and the care of clients that occur on a regular basis. 4.3 Perform audits of processes and outcomes for the renal service as appropriate and in discussion with the clinical director. 5. This qualification must be in the general field of Internal Medicine.
