CROSSING BRIDGES: ADULT MENTAL HEALTH AND SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN ‘They say things like “we only work with your mum” but my mum lives with me so it’s all connected.’ Following an influential piece of research in 1998, the report Crossing Bridges was produced, which recommended much closer working and joint training between Adult Mental Health and Children’s Services. Not working effectively together can mean missing opportunities to: Support adults with mental health problems in their role as parents Protect children from harm or Support children to ensure that they do not suffer adverse health, development or educational consequences This course brings together practitioners from adult mental health and children’s services to share knowledge and skills and promote a greater understanding of each other’s work. The overall aim of the course is to promote more effective joint working in order to to improve outcomes for children and families. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will: Have considered how parental mental health can impact on the welfare and well-being of children and will be better able to recognise when there are safeguarding issues Have identified key aspects of mental health conditions, symptoms and medication and how these might impact on parenting capacity Know the processes of referral and delivery in both adult mental health and children’s services when support needs are identified, and know how to access appropriate support to meet the needs of adults and children Know and understand the importance of information sharing to improve shared robust assessments Requirements for the course: Staff should have completed their own agency Basic/Introduction to Safeguarding Children face to face training or the SSCB Online E-learning Basic Awareness of Child Abuse and Neglect (Core) training before applying for this specialist course.
