FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
Fourth Wednesday of Easter
St. Catherine of Siena, Virgin & Doctor of the Church
April 29, 2015
From the Word of the Day
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1: 7)
How should we live this Word
To walk in the light is not merely a lovely metaphor. Its deep significance is “to live with Jesus who said He
was the ‘Light of the world’. It is to live with Jesus, not so much by kneeling in sweet prayer but rather by
avoiding sin and endeavoring to live the precept of reciprocal love, which is much more than a precept! It
proposes a style of life in fellowship with one another, as the text says”.
It is a beautiful expression that opens onto another very re-assuring consequence; the blood of the Lord Jesus
is not only a vital force permeates this reality of communion, but He Himself is the purifying impetus that
cancels out our sin. This is the blood that redeems us and gives vigor to our life as believers. This theme is
very dear to St. Catherine of Siena, patron of Italy, a great woman illumined by the Holy Spirit. In her letters
addressed to a vast gamut of recipients, even Prelates and the Holy Father, St. Catherine continues to keep
alive even today, the cult of the Blood of Christ Jesus.
In my pause for silent contemplation, I will ask Jesus to let the saving impetus of His blood reach me in my
intentions, my sentiments, and the vigor of my will.
Jesus, through the intercession of St. Catherine, let the blood of Christ flow in me and in the Church to
revive our will to love.
