Elizabethtown Emmaus Newsletter July 2005 DeColores! Greetings from your Community Lay Director! We want to devote this newsletter to providing you with detailed information on our possible sponsorship of an Emmaus Community in Nicaragua. Please read over the information and prayerfully seek God’s Will in this decision. As a Community we will vote on whether to be their sponsor or not at the August Gathering. God Bless You, Fritz Giesecke Walk # 57 Table of Paul As you know by now, our Community has been asked to sponsor a new Emmaus Community in Nicaragua. I have been asked to give you as many details as I know concerning this request, so together we as the Elizabethtown Community can make a decision on this request. Due to the scope of this commitment, the Board will not make this decision on its own. Instead the Community will be asked to decide on this issue at the August Gathering. For several years now a number of people – including folks from the Elizabethtown and the Lexington Communities – have been actively supporting an REC in Costa Rica. Because of this activity a number of people from Costa Rica became familiar with the Emmaus Walk and have now gone on a walk there in Costa Rica. Last April (2005) 18 people from Nicaragua (all leaders from local Nicaraguan churches) went to Costa Rica to attend an Emmaus weekend. The current plan is to sponsor another 18 people from Nicaragua to go on another Costa Rican Walk this October (2005). These two Walks in Costa Rica will produce 36 people in Nicaragua who have been on the Walk. These 36 plus 20 people from the U.S. plus 20 more people from Costa Rica will constitute the leadership and team members for the first 2 sets of Walks in Nicaragua – the necessary Walks to establish the Community there. These Nicaraguan Walks are tentatively scheduled for 2006 and 2007. The attached table represents the estimated costs for this effort. These are estimates, and may not all need to come from our Community. For example, some people from the U.S. may elect to pay their own expenses to travel to Nicaragua (estimated at $1,200 per person per trip). We may also be able to get assistance from other Communities, although this possibility has not yet been explored. For your information, $9,000 was pledged for this program during our June, 2005 Board meeting. I hope this information helps you in making an informed decision concerning this request. May God guide our deliberations and give us wisdom as we consider how to assist our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua.
