Testing absorbency
Instructional Objective (Measurable)
After the lesson students should be able to.
1. Distinguish the connection between the uses of materials and their properties.
2. Represent and interpret data in a tally chart.
Qatar curriculum Standard:
Science
9.1 classify simple materials in various ways on the basis of their similar properties
(P.92).
9.5 know that the use of the materials depends on their properties and devise test to
find out how appropriate they are for the use made of them (P.93).
Materials:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
PowerPoint
26 pieces of work sheets
sponge
4 different kinds of paper towels
Flash cards
4 piece of paper plates, 4 pieces of plastic spoons, 4 pieces of plastic cups,
water.

TEACHING PROCEDURE:
Activating prior Knowledge/ Focus:
Tell them today we will learn how to test the absorbency for different paper towels.
So first we have to remember the word absorbency.
1. Demonstrate spilling water on a carpet and ask ‘If you spill water on the carpet
what will happen?” They will say ‘the carpet absorb the water”
2. Demonstrate putting a sponge in water and ask “what will happen if you put a
sponge in a bath?”
After the students’ answer by saying “sponge soaks up water. Then when you
squeeze it back out to when you wash with it”.
3. Show them different paper towel and ask “do you think all these different paper
towels absorb the same amount of water? Is their absorbency is equal or different?
Which one absorbs more water? Write their answers on the board and tell them let
us do our test to investigate about that”.
Teacher Strategies:
1. Ask who can identify the word absorbency? Check their answer then explain that
absorbency is the material ability to soak up water or liquid.
2. Show them a PowerPoint about absorbency and materials that absorb liquid then
ask them through the slide “Which paper towel is the most absorbent?
3. Tell them our test to find out the absorbency of different paper towels, is by
measuring the amount of liquid each paper towel will hold.
4. Show them the papers and let them touch it then ask them what do you predict.
Which one will absorb more water? Why? Then write their prediction on the board as
a hypothesis and tell them lets do the test to check your prediction.
5. Write paper towel investigation steps on the board:
1- The question (which paper towel absorbs more water?)
2- Hypothesis (students’ predictions)
3- Methods (write the steps during the work one by one)
4- Result (write the result after when you tested all papers and reached to the result)
5- Conclusion (discus to them the result then write the conclusion on the board).
explain and clear each step of the scientific investigation five steps.
The steps of the test:
First: Let students design a sheet or give them ready made sheets to record the data.
- Number the four paper towel brands and record it on the recording sheet.
- Cut equal pieces from each brands. The four sheets must be exactly the same size.
Next: Divide the students in each group should be two students will hold the paper at
each of the four corners over a plastic plate.
- One of them will use plastic spoon to pour one spoon of water at a time on the paper
towel.
- Other student will count the numbers of drops the paper towels would absorb before
starting to drip. And then she will record it in the recording sheet.
- Demonstrate for them how to catch the paper from its four sides and drop a spoon of
water on it to show them how to do it, keep dropping water until it drip down. Then
show them how to write the number of the drop.
-After they learned the steps, let them follow the steps with the four paper towels and
to record all the data on the recording sheets.
Then: Rate the four brands of paper towels according to the number of drops they
held without dripping.
The result: that the brand holding the most number of drops is the most absorbent and
the one holding the least number of drops is the least absorbent and so on.
- Tell them that the use of materials depends on their properties. There is link
between the uses of materials and their properties.
 Give them worksheet explain to them the questions, and then let them
answer while you are rounding and checking, helping if needed.
Students Activities:
1. The students will answer teacher’s prior knowledge and all other questions.
2. They will see and pay attention to the power point and will participate in the
lesson answering teacher’s questions.
3. They will follow teacher’s instructions and each of them will do her role in the
activity.
4. They will do the activity correctly and they will record all the data and then
they will reach to the result.
5. Students should realize that, the use of materials depends on their properties.
There is link between the uses of materials and their properties.
6. The students will answer the worksheet.
Modifications/ Differentiation:
2. For the students who have difficulty understanding, give them a role in the
activity( to drop the water on the paper or to count the drops for example) and
focus on their work while they are doing the activity, help and explain if it is
needed.
3. Ask the gifted students to help them during the activity by explaining if it is
needed.
Lesson Extension:
Let the students to test absorbent / waterproof for different materials and that on the
web site, materials activities site accessed in 21st -5- 2008.

.
Closure:
Ask them what did we learn from this activity? Involve the students sharing group
discussion to find out the answer and let one of each group to answer after the
discussion. Then tell them once again that “the use of materials depends on their
properties. There is link between the uses of materials and their properties, it can be
that the same materials property change from one to another depending on the size or
the thickness, as it was in the paper towels, their absorbency were different from one
to another even though all are paper towels”
Assessment:
1. You can assess them during the activity if they understood and they are
following the activity steps correctly. If they reached to an accurate result.
2. Assess their answers on the worksheets whether they understood the
importance of the property of the materials or not. And if they realized that the
same materials similar property can be different depending on its thickness or
the size of the material.
Reflection:
The kids enjoy manipulating, and working on experiments, so they enjoyed the
lesson. This lesson was two periods and it finished on time. The students reached to
the result and they discussed the result. The lesson was useful and fun.
