Introduction
Thomas Laurance Work, compositor, finished his apprenticeship
on the Aberdeen Free Press, worked in London and arrived in
Melbourne about 1864. In Victoria, he worked on several
newspapers including the Herald, the Weekly Dispatch, the
Collingwood Observer and the Pleasant Creek Chronicle, Stawell. He also
worked for W.H. Williams. Over some thirty years, Work
interviewed many old timers and recorded their reminiscences. He
started a necrological register of all colonial authors, journalists,
compositors, pressmen and machinists from 1850 to 1897. In 1897
he said that it was as complete as he could make it (perhaps it is in
a Melbourne repository somewhere?). The resulting series of
eighteen articles occupied some thirty-six pages under the heading,
‘The Early Printers of Melbourne 1838 to 1858’ by T. L. Work, in
the Australasian Typographical Journal from July 1897 to March 1899.
The articles draw from that necrological register, from his
interviews and from writings by “Garryowen” and James Bonwick,
but he concentrates on actual printers. The articles started as a
paper read to the Printers Overseers’ Association of Melbourne.
They provide a rich source of information about many of the
people and the life of printers in early Melbourne. Work died at
Essendon in 1929, aged 90.
Note: Name, title, occupation and birth and death dates taken
from the text. Where a person is referred to in several articles as
eg. Adcock; E.J. Adcock; Edward J. Adcock - only the full name is
shown in the Index.
