SOUTH EAST OF SCOTLAND SCHOOL OF ANAESTHESIA LAT(s) in ANAESTHESIA JOB DESCRIPTION General Description of the Post These posts are based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with secondments to surrounding hospitals and are available from 02 February 2014 for 6 months until 04 August 2015. All posts have been approved for training by Deanery / GMC and will be at a stage appropriate for the applicant. All major specialties are available in the region. Hospitals and Specialties Involved on the Training Programme Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh The Royal Infirmary is the major teaching hospital within the area with approximately 890 beds. The hospital provides the main Accident and Emergency service for the area and includes the regional Cardio-thoracic Unit, the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, the National Thoracic Aneurysm service and surgical units with a major interest in Hepatobilary, Vascular and Gastrointestinal surgery. Tertiary Obstetric and Intensive Care Medicine services are on-site. Western General Hospital, Edinburgh The Western General Hospital is another teaching hospital within Edinburgh. The Anaesthesia Department provides training in the regional Departments of Clinical Neurosciences / Neuro-critical care and Oncology in addition to General Surgery, Urology, Day Care Surgery and Pain Medicine. St. Johns Hospital, Livingston This hospital is situated some 15 miles west of Edinburgh and includes the regional Burns and Plastic Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery units in addition to gynaecology and obstetrics and Day Surgery. The Intensive Care unit is staffed by the Anaesthetic Department. Fife Acute Hospitals These include the Victoria Infirmary, Kirkcaldy and Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline which are currently being extensively redesigned and upgraded – opening in late 2011. This will provide all elective and emergency services for Fife. They are linked by excellent road and rail links to Edinburgh. 1 Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh The Royal Hospital for Sick Children caters for all types of paediatric surgery excluding cardiac surgery. Borders General Hospital, Melrose This is a modern District General Hospital, which provides experience in a wide range of anaesthetic practice including obstetrics and ITU experience. Melrose is approximately 60 minutes by car from Edinburgh. Intensive Care Medicine There are three general adult Intensive Therapy Units involved in the training scheme based at the Royal Infirmary, the Western General Hospital and Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline. All are staffed full time with dedicated Critical care Consultants 24 hours a day Obstetric Anaesthesia The Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health caters for more than 7000 deliveries per annum and is the regional tertiary referral centre. More obstetric experience is available at St John’s Hospital, Livingston, the Borders General Hospital, Melrose and Forth Park Maternity Hospital, Kirkcaldy, part of the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. Chronic Pain Management Chronic pain clinics together with in-patient management are organised in several hospitals within the region including the Royal Infirmary, the Western General Hospital, Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, the Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy and the Borders General Hospital, Melrose. Research All trainees are encouraged to avail themselves of the research, audit and teaching opportunities available throughout the rotations. 2 Hours of Duty All posts are European Working Time Directive compliant. The out-of-hours commitment and the current or expected banding supplements for the various hospitals in the training programme will be confirmed at a later date. For staff working on a less than full-time training contract, the basic hours are negotiated separately. The out-of-hours commitment is checked and confirmed specifically for the Less Than Full-Time Trainee on an individual basis. The holder of this post will provide mutual cover for annual and study leave of colleagues, provided always that the resulting increase in duties does not cause a practitioner’s average weekly hours to exceed the limits set out in paragraph 20 of the Terms and Conditions of Service. Practitioners shall be expected in the normal run of their duties, and within their contract and job description, to cover for the occasional brief absence of colleagues as far as is practicable. Practitioners will be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration, but may be granted time off in lieu at the discretion of their employing authority. Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however exceptional and practitioners should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis. Location of Duties The post is based at the Royal Infirmary but includes secondments to all other hospitals in the Region as required for training purposes. Satisfactory completion of the SHO curriculum described in the RCA training guide including 3 months ITU and practical experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia. Clinical skills including obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia, pain management and resuscitation. Commitment to Anaesthesia, Commitment to learning, Punctuality, Initiative Potential to cope with stressful situations and undertake responsibility. Good communication skills. Maximum of 4 years as SHO (or equivalent) in Anaesthesia. To arrange accommodation and transport during the rotation to facilitate good time keeping. To have the basic understanding of the use of a computer for word processing and data handling. To be physically able to undertake anaesthetic duties. To understand the role of management and budgets within the NHS. Training on an anaesthetic simulator.
