William Thomas Hughes

William Thomas Jones, and his twin brother John Price Hughes, were born in September quarter 1898, the sons of William Hughes, a bricklayer of Vron Bache, and his wife Margaret

Hughes (nee Edwards). In 1911 the family were still living in Fron Bache, but they later moved to

11 Princess Street. Both brothers joined the army, as did their father, William Hughes who was a sergeant. John Price Hughes became a prisoner of war. William enlisted about May 1917, joining the 3 rd

Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as Private 66836, and after completing he training he was sent to Malta. In July 1917 he was sent to Italy. He was there for four months, but contracted malaria and was repatriated to a hospital in Colwyn Bay. Unfortunately he did not recover, and died on Wednesday 7 th

May 1918. The funeral took place in Llangollen on 11 th

May at St John’s. There was a firing party from Wrexham. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and a volley was fired and the Last Post sounded after the body had been lowered into the grave.

MILITARY FUNERAL. – The funeral of the late Pte. William Thomas Hughes, R.E.F., son of

Sergt. William Hughes, Princess-street, took place at the St. John’s Cemetery, on Saturday afternoon. Deceased, who enlisted about 12 months ago, after completing his training went to

Malta, and in July was drafted to Italy, where he was for four months. He was laid up with malaria.

He was sent home to Colwyn Bay Hospital, and died there on Wednesday May 8. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral on Saturday. A firing party from Wrexham was also in attendance. The bearers were Pts. Thomas Griffiths, Ellis Roberts, J. Trevor Hughes and Ed.

Williams, members of the Llangollen V.T.C., the company, under the command of Lieut. J.H.

Davies, also attending. At the house a short service was conducted by the Rev. S. Owen, B.A., and at the church and graveside the Rev. W.T. Merlin Davies, M.A.. officiated. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, and the usual volley was fired and the Last Post sounded after the body had been lowered into the grave, the firing party being under the command of Sergeant-Major Gorst.

The deceased’s twin brother, Pte. John Hughes, North Lancs, is a prisoner of war in Germany.
