This year’s program of presentations and workshops is incredibly rich.” The 16th annual digital media conference kicks off on Tuesday, October 20 with Director Mark Osborne’s premiere presentation of the animated feature The Little Prince, Emmy-award winning screenwriter David Misch’s exploration of the relationship between humor and horror, modeler Lorne Peterson’s peek inside the ILM Star Wars model shop, a Game Jam, and the Women in Animation Panel with producer Jinko Gotoh, Pixar’s Kim White, SIGGRAPH computer animation festival director Mikki Rose, SCAD professor Deborah Fowler, and producer Eleanor Coleman. Visual effects supervisor Steven Emerson’s steps into the world of big visual effects in a tiny world at Laika. And, the first day rolls to an exciting conclusion with the Animation Film Director’s Panel with Osborne, Jorge R. Gutierrez (The Book of Life), Kris Pearn (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2), Richard Starzak (Shaun the Sheep Movie), and Tindle (“On Ice”). Wednesday, Aardman’s creative director Richard Starzak and producer Paul Kewley wake everyone up with Shaun the Sheep Movie. Three game development-centered presentations follow, from Harvey Parker and Scott Harber of Natural Motion, Marco Mazaglia of Ovosonico, and Oscar nominee Henry Labounta, chief visual officer at Zynga. Art director Ben Brundenell creates the “Dawn of Titans” game, Adobe Lab’s Senior Innovator Michael Rubin will talk attendees through Modernism and Photography, and visual effects supervisor Dadi Einarsson sends the audience climbing Everest. Good Grief! It’s time for The Peanuts Movie with supervising animator Scott Carroll. Keynote speaker Randy Thom, Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound and two-time Oscar winner, caps the evening with “Teaching the Camera to Listen: From Apocalypse Now to The Peanuts Movie. Friday: Attendees will come Home with Jason Reisig, head of character animation at DreamWorks Animation, then race down city streets behind Pixels with Daniel Kramer, visual effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, and find themselves in Jurassic World, the number three world-wide box office winner of all time, with ILM’s Glen McIntosh, animation supervisor, and Tim Alexander, visual effects supervisor. Friday afternoon takes attendees into Night at the Museum 3 with MPC’s visual effects supervisor Erik Nash, followed by a panel of visual effects supervisors sharing their challenges in creating captivating worlds. The conference comes to a rousing finale with the world premiere Keynote address, Kung Fu Panda III by co-director Alessandro Carloni of DreamWorks Animation, and a Keynote address from Oscar nominated visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend who will focus his Marvelous presentation on Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hulk, Vision, and the Gang.” “I am so excited,” Professor Gutierrez says. “I can’t wait for the conference to begin.
