Museums 1. MUSEO DE CIENCIAS NATURALES PADRE IGNACIO SALA (FATHER IGNACIO SALA MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES) www.turisvalencia.es This museum’s collection is made up of more than 16,000 pieces, including extensive collections of minerals, fossils, insects, plants, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles, fish, mammals… The osteology exhibits and the scale replicas of marine mammals round out the museum’s collection. The Museum of Natural Sciences opened in 1880 and was given its current name in honor of Father Ignacio Sala de Castellarnau, who acted as director of the museum from 1939 until 1973. Under his direction, the museum’s collections grew in size and prestige, due in part to his own contributions. The Museum specializes in European fauna, and is in possession of a broad representation of native Valencian fauna, making it one of the most important museums in the Valencian Autonomous Community and unique in the city of Valencia. 2. MUSEU VALENCIÀ D’HISTÒRIA NATURAL (NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF VALENCIA) C/Petxina, 15 www.naturamuseo.com This institution is dedicated to exhibiting, studying and raising awareness about natural heritage, especially that of the Valencian Community, with the goal of protecting nature through better knowledge. Since its inauguration in 1978, it has been under the auspices of the Torres Sala Entomological Foundation, and is in possession of two important collections: Entomological Foundation: Torres Sala. Their museum collections consist of more than 80 entomological boxes featuring beetles, butterflies and moths from all over the world. Another collection of Valencian butterflies and moths has also been contributed by Mr. Emilio Moroder. Siro de Fez Malacology Collection: This important collection of mollusk shells from all over the world was created by the distinguished naturalist Siro de Fez Sánchez. In addition to this collection, various collections belonging to promising Valencian malacologists have recently been incorporated. 3. MUSEO MUNICIPAL DE CIENCIAS NATURALES (MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES) Nursery gardens The Municipal Museum of Natural Sciences is an impressive and educational journey through the history of life and of the Valencian contribution to the Natural Sciences. The museum houses the old Paleontological Museum’s paleontology and malacology collections. It is made up of four areas: Valencian contribution to the Natural Sciences. Valencian contributions to the field of Natural History from the Renaissance to the 20 th century are exhibited. The history of life. This area is home to the paleontology collections. The collection of South American mammals, donated by R. Botet, and a wonderful exhibit featuring Valencian paleontological sites are remarkable for their importance. Malacology. The Rosselló collection, made up of more than 5,000 batches of shells from around the world, is on display. Valencian ecosystems. This exhibit gives an up-close look at the different ecosystems found in the Valencia metropolitan area, with a special emphasis on the River Turia. The Museum also has a gallery for temporary exhibits. 4. MUSEU DE LES CIÈNCIES PRINCIPE FELIPE (PRINCIPE FELIPE SCIENCE MUSEUM) Among the numerous fantastic activities that can be enjoyed in this Valencian ‘Temple’ of the Sciences, it is worth highlighting: SCIENCE ON STAGE This collection of demonstrations and workshops provides a different way to spread science and technique. Using fun experiments co-ordinated by monitors, it seeks out recreational aspects without renouncing a scientific level. Each demonstration stages a series of experiments which, following a script, provide a curious way of teaching science. What’s behind the plug?
