HIV/Infectious Diseases and Kidney Disease HIV has long since been linked with renal disease. Renal dysfunction in HIV+ patients occurs by a variety of mechanism, whether it be through the virus itself (HIV associated nephropathy, HIVAN), through coinfection and subsequent treatment of opportunistic infections, or by drug induced toxicities of the antiretroviral drugs. HIV is by no means a contraindication for renal replacement therapies, including kidney transplantation but it does present complex drug-drug interactions requiring multidisciplinary approach. During this workshop we will cover: Basic overview of HIV/AIDS Current treatment recommendations Renal complications of HIV, including HIVAN Kidney transplantation in HIV+ individuals Neal Marshall , Specialist HIV Pharmacist, Royal Free Hospital Level – Intermediate to advanced 4. Cardiovascular Disease & CKD Chronic kidney disease is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular disease is highly prevalent in CKD patients and mortality due to CVD is 5- to 200-fold higher in dialysis patients than in the general population. This workshop will review the factors contributing to this increased risk and the various guidelines available for the prevention of CVD in renal patients. The evidence base for the guidelines will be reviewed with particular reference to drug therapies in CKD and post-transplant patients. Level = Intermediate – Advanced.
