Workshop Information
1. Introduction to Vasculitis

the condition and its treatment. The workshop will include interactive
case studies to allow participants to discuss issues surrounding monitoring
and management of the disease. Please bring along any protocols you may
have, to share information about your unit’s policies.

Competency Framework for Renal Pharmacists and there will be
discussion about how pharmacists can be supported as they use the
framework to develop from General to Advanced and potentially
Consultant level practitioners. A focus for the workshop will be personal
portfolio development”
All levels
Facilitators: Rob Bradley, Andrea Devaney & Sue Shaw
3. HIV/Infectious Diseases and Kidney Disease
HIV has long since been linked with renal disease. Renal dysfunction in
HIV+ patients occurs by a variety of mechanism, whether it be through
the virus itself (HIV associated nephropathy, HIVAN), through coinfection and subsequent treatment of opportunistic infections, or by
drug induced toxicities of the antiretroviral drugs. HIV is by no means a
contraindication for renal replacement therapies, including kidney
transplantation but it does present complex drug-drug interactions
requiring multidisciplinary approach.
During this workshop we will cover:
 Basic overview of HIV/AIDS
 Current treatment recommendations
 Renal complications of HIV, including HIVAN
 Kidney transplantation in HIV+ individuals
Neal Marshall , Specialist HIV Pharmacist, Royal Free Hospital
Level – Intermediate to advanced
4. Cardiovascular Disease & CKD
Chronic kidney disease is associated with increased cardiovascular
morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular disease is highly prevalent in CKD
patients and mortality due to CVD is 5- to 200-fold higher in dialysis
patients than in the general population.
This workshop will review the factors contributing to this increased risk
and the various guidelines available for the prevention of CVD in renal
patients.
The evidence base for the guidelines will be reviewed with particular
reference to drug therapies in CKD and post-transplant patients.
Level = Intermediate – Advanced.
Facilitator – Steve Ashmore, Clinical Pharmacy Team Leader,
Leeds General Infirmary,
5. Problems in Practice
Back by popular demand, this relaxed and informal session invites

encountered in practice. Don't be shy, no problem is too small or too
difficult.
In addition, current hot topics from the renal world, including national
initiatives,
changes in policy and practice, and the latest research information can
be brought to the lively round-table discussion.
