Deeds Volume 1 page 188 copy on file. Scio Baptist Church was established August 28, 1859. The Church minutes books are very fragile, but I was able to obtain a few copies. In the early days, the church held their meetings on the Saturday before the Second Sunday of the month, and the meetings usually consisted of preaching and then conducting business. Some of the time the last name is spelled Osborn, other times it is spelled Osborne. J W Osborne, Jr. was the tenth and thirteenth pastor of the Scio Baptist Church. From the summer or fall of 1873 until November of 1888, and from October 1898 through August 1899. The first record of him preaching is November 1872, when the minutes say that he preached and was also chosen as moderator for the business meetings. Another record are from the "Saturday before the 2nd Sabbath in October 1873" J. W. Osborne, Sr. preached at the brief business meeting, and was also the moderator of the meeting. The next day J. W. OSborne, Jr. preached and both J. W. Osborne, Sr. and Jr. became members of the church. In December 1873 the minutes mention preaching by Father Osborn and J. W. Osborn Sr. moderated that meeting I am currently researching John Wesley Osborn Senior who was thought to be William Houston Osborn and Samuel Parker Osborn's brother. To date I have not been able to prove this as fact with a birth certificate or death certificate. There is however a hand written letter from John Wesley Jr. Osborn to his niece Susan Ann Henry Dunlap, dated: Dec 8, 1919 Independence, Oregon. Susan H. Dunlap, Dear Niece, I have been in the toils of LaGrippe and am scarcely able to write. I can not give you much information. Obadiah Osborn had no brothers. He was a "Bound of boy", perhaps bound out when his father went into the army. He might have had some halfbrothers but it seems he knew but little about his father's family. Obiadiah had four sons, John Wesley, James Moore, William Houston, and Samuel Parker. These all raised families in the west but I know nothing of them. His daughters were Polly Abbott, Betsy Morrison, Sally McFarland and Emily Scott. James and Polly Abbott lived and died on White River in Indiana. They were people of considerable importance but I know nothing of any of these kinsfolk now. This is about exhusts my knowledge of my father's folks the most of them are dead. I am getting old and shaky and writing is difficult for me. Give sympathies to Belle in her sad bereavment. Farewell, J. W. Osborn Sent to me by Virginia Hoelter in 1998 who sent it to me in typed form, as document was written in pencil and to light and fradgile to copy. I believe that Virgina is right and that they are brothers. I have located Samuel P and William H Osborn in Illinois Census living next to one another.Samuel and John Sr. Osborn lived close to one another in Oregon. I will add more information as I get it. I do have proof that John Wesley Sr. and Jr. Osborn were father and son. As well as Cynthia Adams and John Jr. Osborn marriage record and death certificates. They are also listed in the 1850 Sacramento, California Census together. From 1850 forward I can't locate them except for a land deed dated 1868, Yamhill Co, Oregon. John Jr. Osborn is in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Oregon Census. If anyone has information on any of these families please contact me. page created with Webpage Designer (NS)
