Southcoast surgeon Victor Pricolo, MD, FACS, appointed Cancer
Physician Liaison for the Commission on Cancer
CHICAGO — Surgeon Victor Pricolo, MD, FACS, Chief of General Surgery and
Colorectal Surgery at Southcoast™ Health System, has received a three-year appointment from
the Commission on Cancer as Cancer Liaison Physician for the cancer program at Southcoast.
Cancer Liaison Physicians serve a fundamental role in cancer programs accredited by the
American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).
Dr. Pricolo will be responsible for providing leadership for CoC initiatives within the
Southcoast Hospitals Group program, and for collaborating with agencies such as the American
Cancer Society on behalf of Southcoast. He will also evaluate, interpret and report data from the
Southcoast cancer program to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB). This serves to bring
quality improvements to cancer care for patients based on data findings.
Dr. Pricolo received his medical degree from the University of Milan, Italy, and
completed a surgical residency at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown Medical School in Providence,
R.I. He had additional training in surgical research and metabolism, gastrointestinal endoscopy
and colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Pricolo is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. He has
lectured nationally and internationally, published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and is actively
involved in research protocols to improve treatment outcome and quality of life for patients with
a variety of benign and malignant intestinal conditions.
Dr. Pricolo is one of 1,500 volunteering physicians appointed nation-wide to serve as a
Cancer Liaison Physician for the CoC. The CoC is a consortium of professional organizations
dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting,
prevention, research, education, and monitoring of comprehensive quality care. For more
