The regular meeting of the Executive Board of the West Virginia Reading Association was held at The
Days Hotel in Flatwoods, WV.

CALL TO ORDER
President Kathy Chapman called the Executive Board meeting to order at 9:36 a.m. A quorum was
established and the agenda was approved.
MINUTES
Secretary Bruce Neal read an executive summary from the November 21, 2013, Executive Board
meeting. The minutes were approved as corrected and read. Secretary Bruce Neal read the Delegate
assembly minutes. The minutes were approved as read.

BOARD REPORTS
Reports were given and filed by the following Executive Board members
SECRETARY REPORT
Bruce Neal sent out email correspondence updates and cards and letters of support on behalf of
WVRA.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Dennis Caldwell reviewed income and expenditures through January 9, 2014. The report was filed.
President Elect Dr.Robert Harrison sent his report.
Vice President Tony Nichols has been working on plans for the 2014 Conference. He has confirmed
Richard Gentry and Michael Schechter as Keynote Speakers. He is scheduling a Basket Bingo to help
promote a special guest for the conference, if you would like ticket contact him or Teresa Brown.
Director of Membership Development Kim Burris reported 681 WVRA members:
75 Lifetime Members (1 Honorary) , 577 Regular Members, 11 WV Authors and 7 Parent Members
29 Student members
State Coordinator Joyce Morris reported that the 59th Conference of the International Reading
Association will be held May 9-12, 2014, in New Orleans, LA. Theme for the conference is
“Reading…The Teachable Moment.” This year’s General Session speakers will include Jeff Kinney,
author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid; Dave Pilkey, author of Captain Underpants series; and P. David
Pearson, former Reading Research Quarterly editor and chair of IRA’s Literacy Research Panel.
On behalf of Kathy Chapman, outgoing WVRA President, and Dr. Robert Harrison, incoming WVRA
President, I would like to request that you please update your WVRA Calendar and list June 18-20,
2014, for the dates of our 36th Annual West Virginia Reading Association Leadership Conference, at
the Ramada Inn, Morgantown, WV.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Committee reports were given (or received) by the following committee chairs.
Finance-Moke Post- budget request are due by April 1, 2014
Administrators in Reading-Boyd Mynes-promoted and distributed WVRA website information at the
WVAEMSP convention.
IRA Honor Council-Pat Myers- was delighted to inform us that the West Virginia Reading Association
has IRA honor Councils. For the record, 2013 IRA Honor Councils include:
Cabell County Reading Council, Brooke County Reading Council, Marion County Reading Council,
Mason County Reading Council, Wood County Reading Council, Harrison County Reading Council,
Webster County Highlander Reading Council, Marshall County Reading Council and Nicholas County
Reading Council
Newspapers/Media in Education-Kati Wade –Katie had changed the due to May 15th in order to get
more interest for the awards. Please pass this along to you local council!
Parents in Reading-Margie Suder- remind councils to send request for material early and she will
transport them to executive board meetings to help cut the cost of shipping.
Studies and Research-Jean Pearcy
Citations and Awards-Sharon Cuomo and Jenny K. Stucin – remind everyone to nominate someone
deserving of an award!
Registration- Aleda Hileman
Hospitality-Viki Caldwell and Janet Foss provide us with teats and a visually pleasing atmosphere each
and every meeting.
Evaluations- Elaine Hussell compiled the evaluations of the conference and handed them out for
review.

There was no unfinished business.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please track expenditures throughout the year to help an itemized budget for next year. Budget
requests are due April 1, 2014.
Cash for Literacy, Rotary International Magazine ($2500 to support literacy) Email for detail
rotary.service@rotary.org the deadline for applications is June 15, 2014
