At Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands we have state-of-the-art facilities to design, assemble, test and deliver our technology. And we have more than forty years of knowledge and experience that we can apply in the aerospace and defence industry. Give our engineers a challenge – preferably as large as possible – and they will provide a targeted solution within the budget and time available. Airbus Defence and Space has considerable experience in building instruments for atmospheric research. Together with TNO and KNMI we are now developing the TROPOMI instrument (http://www.tropomi.nl/over-tropomi/about-tropomi/?lang=en) which allows scientists to map carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide and the ozone among other things. The importance of air quality and greenhouse gasses is increasingly recognized by governmental organizations. However, how a true business case can be made using remote sensing data is not yet clear. Therefore the assignment has to address the following questions: Which organisations could act as paying customers for air quality data and what would they need? What is the value proposition they seek? E.g. what aspects of air quality are they interested in? What organisations already provide (commercial) services related to air quality? What kind of organisations are they (commercial, governmental, research, NGO, …). What do they offer? What are the opportunities for Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands? The assignment is in particular suitable to be addressed by a team and train working within a team. Depending on the number of students available in the group, the market analysis may be adopted in breadth and/or depth. Output: Market analysis document 3 See also: http://www.airbusds.nl Time Series Analysis Service for NDVI data Level Duration #Students Start Area Contact : HBO / University : ~10 weeks :1-2 : As soon as possible (2015) : remote sensing image processing : s.koot@airbusds.nl Time series analysis of e.g. NDVI remote sensing data, may provide valuable information for agriculture. This analysis may be provided as a service to the user. The objective of this exercise is to prototype a time series analysis processing chain in the Downstream Laboratory using e.g. NDVI remote sensing data. Using the time series analysis it may be possible to classify land use/land cover or crop cycles start and end and crop cycle anomalies. Another possibility is to cross-correlate rainfall data (e.g. CHIRPS) with NDVI data. Apart from performing different types of timer series analysis for a particular pixel, it is also necessary to aggregate the information in a useful form. A straight forward way is to aggregate using rectangular areas, however practically the aggregation may be done using administrative or geological boundaries. "Bigdata" technology may be useful to manage the diverse data. One of these technologies is "NoSQL" databases. The objective of the internship (20 weeks) is to investigate the application of NoSQL database (e.g. Hadoop, MongoDB) in the Downstream Laboratory using a satellite data processing chain. Activities: (4 weeks) Develop Use cases for satellite data processing chain (2 weeks) Design mapping of satellite data onto NoSQL database (1 week) Select NoSQL database, depending on o Maturity o Availability spatial data interfaces (10 weeks) Build prototype using selected NoSQL database o Integrate NoSQL database in satellite image processing chain 4 Note that the internship main focus is functionality. Performance , although important, is not addressed in this internship. Output: Evaluation application of NoSQL database technology in Downstream Prototype implementation Downscaling Satellite Rainfall Monitoring Information Level Duration #Students Start Area Contact : HBO / University : ~20 weeks :1-2 : As soon as possible (2015) : Remote sensing image processing, modelling : s.koot@airbusds.nl Current open data rainfall information (e.g. CHIRPS) has a resolution of 5km. In mountainous areas this may is not sufficient. Objective of this exercise is the investigation of methods to down scale the resolution using for example micro-climate models to 500m. Output: document describing approach for downscaling rainfall monitoring Demonstrator for Air Quality Products Level Duration #Students Start Area Contact : HBO / University : 10 / 20 weeks :1-2 : As soon as possible (2015) : remote sensing, air quality : s.koot@airbusds.nl Together with TNO and KNMI we are now developing the TROPOMI instrument (http://www.tropomi.nl/over-tropomi/about-tropomi/?lang=en) which allows scientists to map carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide and the ozone among other things. The importance of air quality and greenhouse gasses is increasingly recognized by governmental organizations. However, how a true business case can be made using remote sensing data is not yet clear. Using the Downstream laboratory at Airbus Defence and Space the Netherlands a demonstrator for air quality products can be developed. The student is invited to bring his own ideas. Examples of product ideas are: Air quality indication for holiday locations (e.g. hotels) Air quality indication for residential areas Ship exhaust monitoring Agricultural area monitoring ... Output: 5 document describing the rapid prototype platform prototype / demonstrator product Rapid Prototype Platform for Downstream Services Level Duration #Students Start Area Contact : HBO / University : 10 / 20 weeks :1-2 : As soon as possible (2015) : remote sensing, SW architecture : s.koot@airbusds.nl For the interaction with potential customers a platform is needed to prototype a downstream service in short time. The objective of this exercise is to perform a "rapid" development of a air quality service and identify the needs to support such development. The targeted development time for a prototype service is 1 week. This assignment can concentrate on evaluating the available technologies (e.g. geo publishing and processingplatforms, database solutions, App development platform, ...), As a 'pipeline development' vehicle a service based on air quality remote sensing data could be developed . Output: document describing the rapid prototype platform example service prototype 6
