The Diagnostics Directorate seeks a Consultant Paediatric/Perinatal Pathologist based initially
at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow moving to a new built Laboratory at
Southern General Hospital Glasgow from April 2012 as part of an integrated
Histopathology/cytopathology department for the whole of NHSGGC.
You will be one of three consultants providing the Paediatric/Perinatal service.
Paediatric services are currently provided from The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill.
The current building was opened in 1971 and is the largest paediatric hospital in Scotland and
one of the largest in the United Kingdom. It provides a wide range of services to the local
population and is the regional paediatric centre for surgical and intensive care referrals. It is
the national centre for the management of chronic renal failure, renal transplantation,
paediatric bone marrow transplants and paediatric cardiac surgery. There are 303 paediatric
beds. The hospital treats over 24,000 inpatients a year, there are 10,000 day cases, 36,000
attendances at Accident and Emergency and 30,000 new outpatient attendances per year.
A new children’s hospital is currently being built at the Southern General Hospital campus, colocated with maternity and adult services and will open 2014-15.
You will be appropriately experienced and qualified in the specialty, fully registered or eligible
to be fully registered with the GMC and either included on the Specialist Register or be within
6 months of completion of your Specialist training.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde with effect from 1st April 2006 introduced a revised
organisational structure. This has seen the introduction of a single Acute Operating Division,
a Mental Health Partnership and nine Community Health Partnerships. These changes are
designed to adapt the organisation to best meet the aims of the health reform white paper
“Partnership for Care”.
HOSPITAL SERVICES IN GLASGOW
Clinical Services in Glasgow are currently undergoing fairly extensive reorganisation.
Paediatric services are currently provided from The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill.
The current building was opened in 1971 and is the largest paediatric hospital in Scotland and
one of the largest in the United Kingdom. It provides a wide range of services to the local
population and is the regional paediatric centre for surgical and intensive care referrals. It is

The Royal Hospital for Sick Children has close links with Glasgow University and there are
University Departments of Child Health, Child and Family Psychiatry, Medical Genetics,
Human Nutrition, Paediatric Surgery and Paediatric Biochemistry. The Royal Hospital for Sick
Children also has specialised units of Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT,
Ophthalmology, Neurology, Nephrology, Oncology and Dermatology, together with
Departments of Haematology, Pathology and Radiology.
Following a review of Paediatric and Maternity services the Children’s Hospital will relocate to
the Southern General Hospital where it will co-locate with both Maternity and Adult Acute
services. These new hospitals are currently at an early design stage with a completion date
estimated for 2014-2015. Paediatric and perinatal pathology services will transfer in stages
from the Yorkhill campus to the new pathology laboratory on the Southern General campus
from 2012.
Acute adult inpatient activity is currently delivered from 6 main hospital sites: 1

There are ambulatory care hospitals at Victoria Infirmary and Stobhill.
Specialist Adult Cardiothoracic Services, are provided at Golden Jubilee National Hospital
(GJNH), Clydebank. The GJNH is a stand-alone health authority and does not therefore come
within the management remit of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

HOSPITAL(S) AND CLINIC(S) WHERE SERVICES ARE TO BE PROVIDED
As part of an Acute Services Review, a pan-Glasgow Laboratory Strategic Review
recommended that pathology services for Glasgow and Clyde be provided from a single new
build histopathology laboratory at the Southern General Hospital campus. This building has a
completion date of March 2012. Following the agreement to site Children’s Services on the
Southern General site, Paediatric Pathology services will co-locate and integrate with
Pathology services within this facility.
The pathology service is arranged managerially on a pan-Glasgow basis with a single Lead
Clinician, supported by heads of service on the major sites. The pathology services of NHS
Greater Glasgow are part of the Laboratory Division of the Diagnostic Directorate which forms
part of the Acute Services Division. The Director of the Diagnostics Directorate is Dr. Aileen
Maclennan and the General Manager for Laboratories is Ms Isobel Ferguson, supported by an
Associate Medical Director (Dr Rachel Green) and Clinical Director of Laboratories (Dr Craig
Williams). The Lead Clinician in Pathology for Glasgow is Dr. Margaret Burgoyne. The Site
Lead for Paediatric/ Perinatal Pathology at Yorkhill is Dr Dawn Penman.
This post is for a Consultant Paediatric /Perinatal Pathologist.
The post will be based at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill until March 2012 and
will subsequently be based in the Department of Pathology at the Southern General Hospital.
2.
THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC AND PERINATAL
PATHOLOGY
The Department
The Department of Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology provides a combined supra-regional
specialist paediatric and perinatal pathology service to Central and the whole of the West of
Scotland.
The office accommodation of the Department is situated within the main part of the Hospital
close to the theatre suite with the laboratory and post-mortem facilities part of an integrated
laboratory complex on the south side of the Yorkhill site. Once the laboratory is completed on
the Southern General site, there will be split site working with office accommodation also at
the Southern General. Facilities will be transferred to the Southern General laboratory once
the new laboratory is open, with a hot lab retained in the current Yorkhill laboratory for
intraoperative biopsies until the new children’s hospital transfers to the Southern General site.
The Department has a new electron microscope (installed in 2003). A full
immunohistochemistry service is also available on site. A non-denominational Hospital Chapel
used for funeral services etc. is part of the Mortuary facilities.
The workload comprises approximately 400 fetal, stillbirth, neonatal, infant, childhood and
adolescent postmortems per annum and 4000 surgical biopsies and placentas.
The hospital is a tertiary referral centre for Paediatric Oncology, Nephrology including renal
transplantation and Cardiac Surgery. 19 National service contracts are held by a variety of
disciplines and are supported by the laboratory services.
The Post in Pathology
There is currently one Consultant vacancy. This is a replacement appointment. The post is
based initially at Yorkhill / Southern General but the successful candidate would be expected
to take an active part in perinatal mortality meetings at maternity units within the Greater
Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area and outside Health Board areas for which the perinatal
pathology service is provided.
Duties of the Post include:
Clinical
The post would have an equally shared responsibility with consultant colleagues for the
provision of a specialist diagnostic service for surgical biopsies, fetal, stillbirth and neonatal
postmortems, postmortems of older children and adolescents and Procurator Fiscal work.
The surgical material includes a wide range of biopsies from the specialist oncology, renal,
gastroenterology, metabolic, orthopaedic and surgical units of the hospital. The Department is
planning to re-establish the clinic for ciliary beat frequency analysis for children with suspected
ciliary dyskinesia.
A Neuropathology service is provided by Neuropathologist(s) based at the Southern General
Hospital who are also responsible for all muscle and peripheral nerve pathology at the present
time. Perinatal neuropathology is provided by the paediatric pathologists.
Forensic Neuropathology services are provided by Neuropathologists based in Edinburgh as
part of a recently appointed contract with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service
(COPFS).
The hospital is the Scottish centre for paediatric renal transplantation and paediatric cardiac
surgery. The Consultant staff currently provides a 1 in 3 out of hours cover/on-call for urgent
post-mortem examinations, clinical advice and handling of fresh biopsy material.
Clinical Meetings and Audit
The Department hold regular meetings with the specialist units (e.g. Renal, Gastroenterology,
Orthopaedic, Surgical, Fetal Medicine, Genetics, ENT etc), within the hospital. The appointee
would be expected to play a full part in any such meetings and also the regular Paediatric
Review and Audit Meeting (PRAMS) and Perinatal mortality meetings in the hospital and
outside maternity units.
Teaching
The appointee would be expected to take an active part in (i) the training and supervision of
the Specialist Registrar(s) in Paediatric Pathology and general and forensic pathology trainees
on rotation; (ii) the teaching of undergraduates and post-graduates attached to the clinical
departments (iii) teaching of Department BMS staff as part of their CPD programme.
Research
An interest in research would be desirable but not essential. Any research undertaken is
subject to approval by the West of Scotland Research Ethics Service and would require to be
funded appropriately at source.
Other External Commitments
The appointee would be expected to take an active part in appropriate EQA’s CME/CPD
activities as specified by the RCPath, and the advancement of medical knowledge through
contribution to appropriate learned societies. Local meetings are also convened in the
department for both Paediatric Pathology consultant peers and trainees with which the
appointee will be asked to contribute to. Co-operation with external case review is also
mandatory, e.g. UKCCLG etc.
The successful candidate will be expected to be on the specialist register or be eligible for
entry to it, with a CCST/ CCT in paediatric pathology.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the
